Re: epic length pieces
Finally got through this - not, alas in one sitting, but in four (did anyone else have a problem with track 2, which cuts out from 13'52" to 51'34"?). Not without its moments, but.. too long. The recording is a bit distant though, which affects your listening in the long run. Had it been recorded as well as Tilbury's Jennings disc, it might have been another story. Talking of epics, we need more Jennings out there. Charles Curtis's realisation of LMY's String Trio too, but I guess we'll have to wait for the 150th anniversary of Young's death before he consents to release it.

Re: epic length pieces
And while we're on Lost Daylight, I recently attended some of Philip Thomas's 12-hour realisation of Cage's 'Electronic Music for Piano' at the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival. There were other concerts going on at the same time in other venues (including the Tilbury / Davies / Duch trio, and a brilliant performance of a Rebecca Saunders piece by the Ensemble Recherche), but I must have caught about 6 hours of it in all, and it was brilliant. Philip had used chance procedures to determine everything, and the performance involved all of Music for Piano #1 - 84 played live (at various chance-determined durations) plus recorded performances of the same pieces played back through speakers with electronic treatments (again chance-determined), plus extra electronic elements such as microphones bringing in sounds from outside the room etc. The overall result was very different from the Tilbury/Lexer realisation on Lost Daylight, but equally strong imo. That man's stamina is amazing.
Re: epic length pieces
coincidentally I played Lost Daylight for Mr. Rowe earlier today, who hadn't heard it before and we were both loving the Jennings pieces, 31 minutes of the best music of 2010 right there. I still have trouble with sections of Electronic Music for Piano, some sounds I really dislike, but since the musicians attempted to "distance ourselves as much as possible from any aesthetic decision-making", I suppose it's hard to criticize fairly.
also coincidentally, after I started this thread a week ago, I was pretty thrilled to learn this week that Keith is planning to do an extended version of The Room, probably in the four hour range, sometime in the next year or so. this will be released as an ErstSolo on DVD-A, I couldn't be more excited.

Strongly agree with this. We are truly privileged to have this recording.jon abbey wrote:coincidentally I played Lost Daylight for Mr. Rowe earlier today, who hadn't heard it before and we were both loving the Jennings pieces, 31 minutes of the best music of 2010 right there.

Re: epic length pieces
It is a series of eight ca. 40 minute electronic pieces Jürg did for an installation with the artist Mauser. It is primarily sequences of slowed down samples of recorded instruments - including various percussion (like rubbing stones) - gently looping. Really quite beautiful, especially in a large, reverberant space like a gallery. (We did the installation at CalArts about three years ago. Jürg adjusted the volumes so that they were like a delicate change in the air.)frozen reeds wrote:Anyone heard this or know more about it?jon abbey wrote:b-boim just put out a 320 minute piece by Jurg Frey on 8 individual CD-Rs, I expect those here soon.
Re: epic length pieces

Re: epic length pieces
off topic, but I just saw on your site the ErstSolo with Sachiko M isn't listed anymore. What happened?jon abbey wrote:also coincidentally, after I started this thread a week ago, I was pretty thrilled to learn this week that Keith is planning to do an extended version of The Room, probably in the four hour range, sometime in the next year or so. this will be released as an ErstSolo on DVD-A, I couldn't be more excited.
(or did I totally imagine that it used to be there?)
Re: epic length pieces
we missed the window, she got sick of doing contact-mike only work (she only did it for a really brief period). my thinking is there's at least the one track on 'contact' out there, and maybe it'll still happen sometime down the road.
(sorry for the off-topicness)

Re: epic length pieces
You're forgiven - on condition you release a 4 hour Sachiko album in the near future.

I assume most of you have come across Jem Finer's Longplayer: http://longplayer.org/what/overview.php The idea is that, in some form, the composition is realised for 1000 years.
Great to listen to when you run out of other things.

oh yeah, John Luther Adams' sound installation in Alaska "The place where you go to listen." It's a room with continuously changing music/lights due to natural events occurring in areas of alaska (earthquakes, northern lights, time of day, what season it is, etc...).

Re: epic length pieces
the Barooni edition of this had a big impact on me as I was starting Erst, somehow I link it in memory to Omit-Quad (Corpus Hermeticum) (a 3 CD set), both 1997 releases, epic electroacoustic sets from wildly different perspectives, I listened to both a lot at the time. thank you, Mr. Kayn, RIP.sepulveda disaster wrote:I'll throw in, at the risk of cheating: Roland Kayn, Tektra (4 CD)

Seconded..

Re: epic length pieces
via FB this week, I learned of a couple of epic Wandelweiser projects in the works:
1) Antoine Beuger performing John Cage-Empty Words (Sandra Schimag-speaker). Antoine plans to release this in the next few months as a double MP3 CD, length around 10 hours (!!!).
2) Michael Pisaro-a two DVD set of 'Reading Spinoza' (a 4 hour piece with text by Spinoza - Book V of the Ethics, video by Christoph Nicolaus and music by Pisaro), for release sometime in 2012.

Yeah, what he said up there. That is probably my favorite Spinoza. So excited about that one.
