[Sonic Circuits]

Merzbow is performing with Richard Pinhas. Their collaboration is more heavy psychedelic noise, atmospheric, dense, and trippy rather than a harsh noise assault. Their double CD on Cuneiform is great and this is their ONLY appearance as a duo in North America. Sure it will be loud but more acid trip than punch in the gut.

I wasn't referring to the harshness, but the actual volume for hearing damage because I already have tinnitus and I'd rather it not get any worse and I'm a bit sensitive to loud sounds. Like, Peter Brotzmann acoustic without earplugs was too loud for me, but I was also right in front of him in a very small room. I don't know how the man has so much air in his lungs. I guess I'll show up with earplugs and I can always leave if I'm approaching deafness.

I'm surprised nobody took you guys up on having lunch with Merzbow, the man seems like he's hard to get ahold of, you would think somebody would want to hang out with him. Although it might be kind of a frightening experience.

I'm excited for this, but I don't see full tour info posted online: the trio of Keith Rowe / Oren Ambarchi / Crys Cole are playing a few dates in Canada and the US November / December.

Anyone have more info for either tour?

i'm sure bonnie will post tour dates, but they are playing philly 10/3 (http://phillysoundforum.org/), and i think some shows in virginia, plus andrea is here for the high zero fest.

I haven't talked to Keith about this in a few weeks, but that was the general plan the last time we spoke, a few Canadian dates that Crys arranged and then hitting NY on the way home (he always has to visit Brian and me when he's in North America ).

bonnie/andrea were great last night. psyched to hear the studio recordings. for nyc people that don't know, there's a show tonight (10/3) in nyc with a big crew, at fotofono. wow, looks like gill even put his address online!

That sounds like a great combo, thinking about it I haven't heard much from either of them recently. I'd like to hear more about this show and what they are doing these days. There use to be a thread here for short live reports. Ah here it is: Recent Live Reports.

i'm kind of terrible at describing live shows for which i didn't take notes, especially as i was distracted being the presenter and documenter (though this does mean some ok [mono, bad audio quality] videos will emerge soon). but both seem to be doing a bunch of projects. just listened to some of andrea's cd with sabine ercklentz, which i had slept on and which is great. bonnie has a forthcoming cd of live shows with bhob rainey and chris cogburn and also a "round-robin" project with a bunch of people that i am not sure if i am supposed to talk about yet.

bonnie/andrea's set was really good, a bit surprising. bonnie said beforehand that they would do two separate "pieces," which ended up being separated by a short silence. bonnie seemed surprised when i said that if she hadn't made the announcement, i would have just thought it was one long piece, though i heard others say the same. andrea was describing to someone how the "pieces" worked, but i couldn't really hear her. suffice to say, i think they weren't through-composed. both of them, particularly the first, were a bit louder and noisier and busier than i expected this duo to be. in the second one, andrea played some very nice quasi-melodies, plucking a note and then fading it in on her mixer for an ebow kind of tone.

sorry i don't have a better memory. i'll post videos today or tomorrow if bonnie/andrea ok it.

just back from Bonnie/Andrea's second NY set, which wasn't too different from the one Friday night at Issue Project. they have a really nice chemistry and balance, both sets were very enjoyable. I'm proud to announce they'll be doing an Erst, although it probably won't be out until early 2012.

two years ago, yep. that's when we started talking about doing a full-length instead.

a fantastic show by this trio watched by around 75 people.
Split in 2 halves, the first was similar with the music on Cranc, mostly extended tones focusing on texture from all three. second half Veliotis switched to piano (or rather some sort of electronic sensors inside it) and the music displayed a lot more upfront character both from Kostis but primarily from Capece's multitude of add-ons to his already impressive bass clarinet. Loved Capece's visceral performance where he seemed to becoming one with his instrument.

thoroughly enjoyable gig, suffice to say that 2 friends I managed to drag along were totally focused throughout and kind of speechless at the end.

do make the effort to see them if they come around your town.

a bunch of shows coming up that I'm excited about: Larkin Grimm, Sunburned Hand of Man, Masaki Batoh and Damon & Naomi. Plus the Homegrown festival in Boston.

One thing that should be mentioned that I think really made the set special (for me at least) was when Bonnie and Andrea started singing a traditional Appalachian folk song . Granted it was brief but it worked on top of everything else they were doing! I can't even think of the last time I saw an improviser incorporate vocals and didn't make my skin crawl.
