Upcoming Shows 2010 (non promotional)
Fresh for 2010.
Re: Upcoming Shows 2010 (non promotional)
a few shows left in the EI fest here, I'm looking forward to the Kammerer/Schick on Wed.
also, Toshi Nakamura is playing solo here on April 8, at Issue Project.
================================================
EXPERIMENTAL INTERMEDIA
The Thirty-seventh Anniversary of EI performances at 224 Centre Street, The Forty-second Anniversary of the Founding of Experimental Intermedia, the Forty-second Anniversary of the 224 Centre Street loft, and, not least, The Twentieth Annual Festival with no fancy name, Part Two (or B)
Phill Niblock, curator
MARCH 2010
Tom Johnson (Paris) Tuesday 23
He was one of the first composers to present his work at the EI loft; his now well known "Nine Bells" was premiered there, as were some of the first examples of his "counting music" series, the lectures with audience participation, and other things; after 15 years in New York, he
left the big apple and the Village Voice and settled in Europe, where he has continued writing operas and radio pieces, and where his pure music has become more and more mathematical;
the evening will include "Music and Questions" (1988), excerpts from very recent pieces, and probably, for old times sake, the "Lecture with Repetition" (1975) www.tom.johnson.org

Ignaz Schick and Margareth Kammerer (Berlin) Wednesday 24
Two solo sets and one collaborative set: Kammerer - electric guitar and voice and Schick: turntables; Kammerer workfield is the song : in her solo she will present a selection of them where she investigates the sound of the voice in different languages and songforms in combination with minimalistic melodies and texts; Schick plays turntables without vinyls creating a vast palette of sounds by only using objects directly on the metal plate of the turntable; he calls the set-up "Rotating Surfaces"; the friction sounds are simply amplified with a condenser microphone; various objects (wood, plastic, metal) create rich textures from tonal drones to thick layers of harsh noise and are sometimes sampled and slightly pitched in realtime; in their duo, they explore the creation of a sound form combining both improvised and composed material, with electroacoustic soundscapes and songs www.zangimusic.de www.myspace.com/margarethkammerer www.myspace.com/ignazschick
*****************************************************************************************************
Taka Iimura and Haruyuki Suzuki (Japan) Friday 26
Part one - videos by Iimura with electronic music by Suzuki, "A Rock In The Light," (1985/2008) a landscape video shot in Australia which was structured along the axis of light and - "Eye For Eye, Ear For Ear" (1967-70/2008); part two, solo performance by Suzuki, using only electric equipment www.takaiimura.com http://japanesecomposers.info/eng/modul ... x.php?id=5

this looks interesting:
Untitled Seven
Emma Hart & Benedict Drew

Opening reception: Saturday, April 3, 2010, 8 -11 p.m.
Live Performance: Saturday April 3, 7 - 8 p.m.

"For their debut exhibition in Canada, Hart and Drew will present Untitled Seven, a new installment in this series that exists both as a site-specific installation as well as a live performance within the main gallery of the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art. This new work builds on some of the ideas present in Untitled Five, presented as a performance at the ICA in London in 2008, in which the artists created not just a single system, but rather a large interconnected network of projection and sound apparatuses, filling the gallery with a cacophony of projected light and sound."

I think your best bet would be the Amtrak train -- if you book in advance enough it isn't that expensive. There might be seat sales too. I'm sure there's a cheap bus option, but I've done both bus and train between MTL and NY and the bus was a nightmare.
Re: Upcoming Shows 2010 (non promotional)
only problem is that the train is crazy slow.
pretty appealing shows but i won't be able to go. rats.

Wow! Joda - do we get a spillover of this over at the Music Gallery?
"A little older, a little more confused"
Re: Upcoming Shows 2010 (non promotional)
Nope. I wish though. Only things coming from Suoni to the MG are William Basinski, Grouper and also the Ken Vandermark 5 is coming from VTO. I'm going to be in Montreal for the shows, myself.Salty Swift wrote:Wow! Joda - do we get a spillover of this over at the Music Gallery?
I'm actually surprised to see that these artists are coming to Suoni. I knew that some folks who are involved in organizing the fest have interest in 'eai' -- it's usually dominated by lots and lots of free jazz and psychedelic/folk whatever stuff -- so I'm glad to see they're keeping things fresh.
Re: Upcoming Shows 2010 (non promotional)
Any chance of Radian and Kurzmann et al. coming down to NYC after that?
Re: Upcoming Shows 2010 (non promotional)
not that I know of, Radian were just here a month or two ago.
