album covers inspired by actual pieces of art

Post by michael »

inspired by seeing thomas coles' 'old age' painting @ the national gallery, which is the cover for nightfall by candlemass

when i saw it i did a double take. i guess simply b/c i didnt know it was a prior existing piece, i had never seen his 'voyage of life' paintings either (not that i know anything about art to begin w/.) anyway, it was probably the highlight of my day

Not sure I would say the SY cover was inspired by the Richter painting, as it was a reproduction.

the MIMEO has Caravaggio and Pollock, you don't see that combo too often.

What about including some comments about the relevance of the artwork for the music? If there is any, that is.

The metal band ones seem plain enough: grand, epic, or occult music needs grand, epic imagery with a dose of the fantastic distant past. But by taking them out of context and reducing them to metal imagery (which might have been originally for the CD) it has less of an air of gentrification about it. Jazz, clasical and improv audiences are more likely to be expected to be at least passingly familiar with art history already, possibly. The EAI ones, maybe like the jazz ones before it, are uncomfortable in the world of popular culture and have their eyes set on the socially upwardly mobile world of contemporary gallery art or on hints of classical education. It would be impossible to count the number of classical music CDs with images of fine art on the cover for this reason--it's socially appropriate.

The alternative title for the De Chirco painting is "The Prophet"--what Monk was supposed to be for jazz, maybe. Archie Shepp's Fire Music and Ornette's Free Jazz both have paintings on the covers also, but jazz trying to be taken seriously in the context of racism and EAI trying to be taken "seriously" (in the legitimate art sense) are mostly different affairs, I'd say. Nurse With Wound was obsessed with the early European avant garde and attempted to apply its collage principles to music (not very well), and so in a fairly literal move plastered most of its covers in references to them. The Bow Wow Wow one cleverly preserved the shock of the original painting by transferring it to photography, as well as it being a nice bit of meticulously staged plagiarism. The remake caused just as much of a scandal among the new puritans. But some are just striking images, I suppose, and as Michael says, why not re-use and popularise them.

re: previous post

what album cover is that? Is it an album cover by the band Low?

Here's one:

Mark Schwaber - The Killing Card

Not too sure about this in terms of context. Haven't heard this CD but I have heard him perform live. Mostly indie folk type stuff. He's a local artist out in Western MA. Lou Barlow seems to have an affinity towards him. I kinda think he's trying to hard though by using this Henry Darger piece for the album cover.

I didn't know about this one, but I've always loved that cover. Nicely (re)realized, I think.
