You've heard him on the Cooper-Moore trio releases? Great playing in that unit, big ears, fluid and apposite percussion.

Experimental music should be something that suggests a way of organizing your thinking, your attitude toward the world, which suggests that the world could be different.

love this record (and his other solo). joe, even if you hate the sea and cake, these have the killer rhythm section of josh abrams and chad taylor. hard to beat chad taylor. plus rob mazurek, and jim o'rourke production on the above disc.
Agreed. Both are great albums and make for lovely spring listening, I've found.

thanks for the tip. i haven't heard much of his post-chicago, nyc era stuff. someone pointed out to me he now drums for (kind of boring indie rock, m&m commercial soundtrack providers) iron and wine?! weird.

Iron and Wine did an M&M commercial?

Also, I wouldn't necessarily toss all those albums into "kind of boring indie rock." The first album, The Creek Drank The Cradle is great.

fair enough. everything i've heard by them kind of sounds the same to me and has those semi-forced-sounding hushed vocals.

love these Roswell Rudd arrangements of Coltrane's tunes.
Shepp's 1st on impulse as a leader is my favorite.

Rudd was here last month, sent me comps through Facebook (!). Got to hang briefly with him and his partner. He was amused at my telling him (like a fan boy) that I brought my original Emanem copy of School Days for his signature. His recorded output is, relative to age and gigging, not huge. But vital, occasionally essential-the Shepp release is fantastic, Rudd penetrated those tunes, then added his own flavor.

I'm happy I turned the volume up. Those double bass pieces certainly sound better a bit loud...
