Kevin Drumm - Impish Tyrant

I've heard that it's like Sheer Hellish Miasma, but more brutal.
I'm in the mood for brutal, and I see that this cassette is being sold in a current E-auction, so I'm thinking about bidding.
(Plus I'm a sucker for collectibles and I know this tape isn't seen around too often.)

Can anyone lend their opinion on this music?

it's not really that much like SHM. it's more stabby and slashy than brick wall, definitely a latter stage in drumm's approach to black metal noise. land of lurches is a better reference.

the tape to watch for if you want something in line with SHM is the tape 'i drink your skin', a tape-trade collab with aaron dilloway.

Thanks Mudd, I forgot about Land of Lurches. I actually prefer that one to SHM, as there's more variety in its composition.

I'll definitely be digging out the Lurches tonight!

Yeah, Purge is definitely a good one, but I think I like Lurches better. I refreshed my feelings for it last night after mudd's recommendation.

"land of lurches" is the only drumm solo i actually don't like. (probably the only one i don't love). it's far too much of a "my first analog synth" record. (maybe i should dig it up and listen to it again.)

"purge" is excellent. really exciting to hear him do a full-on harsh noise album again.

really hope that newest hospital tape gets a cd release. his last two on that label both did.

you know, i have heard it, but not in years. i didn't manage to grab a copy when it came out, but a friend did. i only heard it once or twice, but my memory of it is very positive. of course, it came out in about '03 or '04, if i remember correctly, and it was a time when i was prepared to adore absolutely everything kevin did. there was also the tape on freedom from around that same time. i remember both being excellent, but not necessarily dubbed very well. (the same is the problem with the tape on chondritic.)

i think that a retrospective of drumm's noise tapes would be useful. something like the lasse marhaug box on pica. so many of them are highly sought after, and the only way to hear a lot of them is via bad digital transfers from bad cassette dubs. the material is out there on the internets, but not in the way they should sound.

several of those digital transfers are mine. which is not to say that they aren't bad...

i think the FF tape was a fair bit early, possibly even before SHM. impish tyrant theoretically sold out at the first no fun fest, but a few copies showed up at fusetron a short while later and i managed to snag one of them.

i think my KD cassette collection is complete, but obvious tapes are more trouble to share than cds. i dunno if i'd put impish tyrant particularly high on my favorites list, but i haven't really sat down and listened straight through them either.

we really need a good cassette noise thread sometimes. i buy tapes occasionally, but haphazardly.

i meant no disrespect regarding the digital transfers. i am sure that the ones you're responsible for are perfectly fine. there's obviously the issue of how well the material was transfered to the cassette in the first place.

and i wasn't even necessarily referring specifically to transfers of drumm tapes but to digital transfers of noise cassettes in general. most are very poor and end up being an inaccurate representation of the music.

oh i didn't take it that way at all, no worries.

part of the challenge of cassette noise is distinguishing the cassette from the noise. i've generally found that drumm tends to completely fit within the cassette format, with the extra sounds integrating with the recorded content very well. usually. on the other hand his collaboration with prurient sounded pretty bland to me on tape, but i rather enjoyed it later when i heard it on cd...

recently reissued 'Imperial Distortion' 2xcd is prob my fav release...was a big fan of the 'Snow' tape that was included on there...can't wait to hear the new 2xcassette "Malaise" on Hospital~
also huge fan of Drumm's guitar work..his side of the split LP with Pita on BOXmedia is a stunnner!

Oh, and I very much agree with mudd with regard to cassette noise. In fact, I think noise might be the only genre for which cassette is the ideal format, both in terms of the whole "buzzing, degrading and static" thing (something that my deck has pretty much perfected, turning even dusty Nat King Cole tapes into avant-destruction) and the typical brevity of cassette-only releases.

yes this is all fine and well, but i wish that some of the more important noise tapes could eventually make it onto a more permanent medium. i'm really into these box set reissues, like the lasse marhaug one, and the incapacitants "box is stupid" (which i am listening to right now). the haters/merzbow collaboration from '87, reissued last year by banned productions is another great example of this.

i would really love for noise to get just popular enough that it becomes profitable to give these older recordings the deluxe reissue treatment so that the younger fans can actually learn about the history of the genre. i think it's really unfair that the noise old timers (with myself on the younger end of this classification) get to attack all the noise n00bs for not understanding their heritage, but do nothing to make that available to them.

and though he's not at all an old-timer, drumm is definitely an artist for whom this kind of a box set would sell. someone should really pitch this idea to kevin.

I think that was the last time he played here, what was the name of that place? Flux Factory? I remember an as yet little known Carlos Giffoni was on that bill, neither he nor I have been able to get Kevin to play here since.

Yeah, it was the Flux Factory. It closed pretty recently, it looked like they did some pretty interesting stuff, but I never went to any of it after the Drumm show.

I remember Carlos' set! That was a good show, Nicedisc played, as did Sightings, and maybe someone else too.
