will try and do! we'll see if this happens or not. but yeah. . . the grant world is pretty goofy. i am just starting to learn about it as a musician, but it's pretty basic for organizations and presenters, i guess. to be fair, their notion is to help music organizations get better at what they do, but in practice i think it's often pretty wasteful and mostly serves to keep the entrenched entrenched.

i think we'll run something like this:

Friday: Glasgow University Chapel (Organ): 7pm - 11pm: Nitsch, Nakamura/guionnet, one other organ work TBC
Saturday: The Arches: 4pm-11pm: running order TBC
Sunday: The Arches: 4pm-11pm: running order TBC

we're just working out the schedule, people's arrival, a reasonable running order in terms of a dynamic for each day etc and so on. there may yet be some extra things added also.

I'm pretty easy to please, but from both backstage and frontstage, Arika's stuff is extremely well done. I wouldn't turn down an opportunity to play or just be at any of those events.

It's near enough underneath Central Station!

One problem I found with the last Instal I went to was that a lot of the quieter acts were fighting with the (albeit infrequent) trains passing overhead. It's not just an Instal problem, by any means, though.

Do you know if anything is being done (if anything *can* be done) to combat this, Barry?

hey:

Trains: yeah, the arches is directly below central station. the arches in question were in fact built as the foundations and stables for the victorian station. they're 4 storeys below the station proper, and you can hear the train rumble overhead now and again. not so loud as you'd notice it for most live music, but certainly noticeable for quieter stuff. but it's just a fact of the situation, and quieter artists have dealt with it very well over they years, notably sachiko/ cosmos and AMM.

think of it as rain hitting a tin roof.

i'm not worried about it at all.

For me the trains were no issue at all. In fact I think I would rather they were there than not. Not to sidetrack this thread (and please lets not sidetrack it!) but I wrote in my review of part of last year's Instal that whilst the noises coming from the performers upstairs did impinge on the music below, the trains were very much a welcome addition. I asked a Cagean question about intention/unintention here, when the sounds were part of the everyday environment (trains, traffic, rain on the roof as Barry says) these were fine and quite welcome. When they were the sound of Junko soundchecking perhaps less so.

Perhaps we can go and throw a lot of leaves on the line before each day's performances...?** Otherwise probably not.

Yeah, it's a fair point about the interplay of the music and environmental sound but I think some styles of music or artists accept it more openly. Depends on the piece in question, really. I'm completely not blaming Barry for the train noise and the Arches is still a great venue...just wondered what the venue/promoter's take on it was.

Really keen to get over to this, definitely.

i tried to get the 20-pound advance pass, but i could only find the 25 pound version on the arches site. is that a known issue?

there's no limit on them, apart from the date. just a way of welcoming in the keen.
