Has anyone heard this new Braxton trio recording with William Parker and Milford Graves?(Improvised)...I'm kind of curious about it but it's probably pretty predictable. Also Tzadik always requires precaution for me...

I haven't heard it yet, but you can bet I will.
And Tzadik is a preocupation for you? why? There are some really good things coming from out there. In fact Lucifer: Book of Angels Volume 10 of Bar Kokhba is another one of my favorites this year so far.

Precaution is understandable, but in this case there's no need for it. It's a highly recommended release.

I really want to hear his new album. I've heard some of For Alto but don't remember it well.

The AMG review of Beyond Quantum has automatically made it one of the records I most want.

It being on the best avant-garde label there is only makes it better.

Has anyone heard the new Falling River Quartet (Braxton + bassoon, piano and violin)? They recently played in Poland and Philadelphia. I'm quite attracted to the instrumentation of this ensemble and am unfamiliar with the musicians except Braxton and Katherine Young.

Having heard only heard "For Alto" doesn't really give you a strong grounding to decide what is "best" avant garde label is. Like Braxton or not his discography and the labels he recorded for are a big part of the "avant garde".
No question Tzadik has done some great and important albums and believe me I wanted this to be one of them but it just falls pretty flat. I hope something will reveal itself in repeat listens, but I am not too hopeful...

Agree. It's not too bad though. On "3rd meeting" (the best track of the disc IMO) at times he sounds like a pianoless coltrane.
From his recent output i was pleased to get the "2 + 2 Compositions" with Matt Bauder, which felt like Braxton is embracing a more contemporary sound. But beyond that I don't dig much else (the little i have heard has been said before).

Yeah, it is not a bad album it just isn't as monumental as it could be. I agree for sure on the Bauder album. The trio without Braxton, "Memorize the Sky" is even better IMO. The new one on Clean Feed is my album of the year so far.

Not exactly the same but I would put Braxton's sound similar to what Henry Threadgill, Muhal Richard Abrams and Tim Berne do.
Of course there are recordings more or less like those mentioned, since Braxton have been on so many different styles.

Braxton himself has stated that his primary initial influences were Paul Desmond, John Coltrane and Warne Marsh.

I hear a lot of Marsh's sound in his playing at times on both tenor and alto, as well as his sly Marsh-ian rhythmic displacements and phrasing on some of the other horns he utilizes.

His new one on Leo just arrived (quartet, moscow, 2008, with taylor ho bynum, mary halvorson and katherine young), I have high hopes for that one, it's with a bassoon, hurray!

Out of DMG's latest newsletter about the upcoming Mosaic set:

"this set DOES NOT include the Time Zones [1 LP] duet with Richard
Teitelbaum [so much for 'complete'], nor the For Two Pianos [1 LP]
which is performed by Rzewski and Oppens"

Time Zones wasn't Arista specifically (It was Freedom, I think), and For Two Pianos is included in the set. I don't see any problem with the "complete" description.
