Experimental music should be something that suggests a way of organizing your thinking, your attitude toward the world, which suggests that the world could be different.

I have shot right by Jim O'Rourke's output.
Could I please get some suggestions, and I will distill them down to 2-3 releases?
Are the For4ears worth checking out?
Proviso: I am especially interested in electro-acoustic projects under his name, vs. Gastr del Sol or SY. Unless he's made a great rock album I should hear.
Thanks in advance.

you should probably start a standalone thread, if we don't already have one.

the best of the F4E discs is Weighting, and he's also on the Butch Morris release on there, which was by far the most electroacoustic Morris release, at least up to that point (I haven't paid attention to Morris in recent years).

John Stevens Trio with Evan Parker & Barry Guy, recorded at my 8th birthday in some club in London. The audience is noisy, and so is the music; I'm very familiar with those guys' music, but Parker's fierceness here really surprises me.

i'm not that into "slow motion," but i remember weighting being good, per jon's mention, and the disc with voice crack is solid as well.

gastr's "upgrade and afterlife" and "mirror repair" are seriously two of the best records ever made. you're making a mistake if you ignore them. only rock music in the most tangential sense; i think there's maybe two or three "rock beats" across both of them, and one of those is on a really, really good track ("hello spiral"). i just listened to both of these a bunch, and they blow my 29-yr old mind as much if not more than my 16-yr old mind.

i really like "eureka" a lot, but it's an odd one. semi-cheesy songs with a strong 70's rock influence and lots of odd arrangements and production choices. kind of brilliant, though.

in the vein of what you mention above, the disc on mego is great, and "happy days" is fun if you like that stuff (heavy, escalating niblock-esque drone). the earlier dronier things i have heard (both solo guitar and tape pieces) are not really essential. haven't heard much of the recent spate of reissues, limited releases, etc.

Wow, strong words, Jesse. I'll check 'em out (assuming they are in print/available).

i meant for that to be a new thread, but oh well. . . .

if it helps, maybe the list of guests on "upgrade and afterlife" will entice you:

definitely might hate me for my recommendation, its jims pop song about trying to have a threesome. Funny enough mr Pinnell recommended it as something i'd like, being really into the frogs. The only experimental side of o'rourke that i have heard is the orange record on charizma or whatever that deal is, with kevin drumm and like 4 other people(kurzmann too i believe?). Thats a cool early eai deal.

Its a fucking brilliant song though.

Cormega is definitely better. I have actually only heard his albums on cassette, and I'm really not old enough for that. Also, one of my favorite Ghostface verses ever is on his track "tony montana" off legal hustle. that verse is NANNERS. Plies is kinda fun, hes not a very good rapper by any means though, hes just got a lot of swagger. Kinda like Rick Ross, who made one incredibly dope song followed by nothing but bullshit. Also, there is already one rapper named after RICK "FREEWAY" ROSS you fuck, pick a better name.

now listening to

Jesse - I'd recommend two highlights from O'Rourke's career thus far IMO - Table, Chair and Hatstand [with Muller and VoiceCrack] and a duo with Muller entitled Slow Motion [released a few years prior to the first title mentioned].
Both were released on For4Ears and I think should still be in print.

I dont have the time to figure out my top 5 songs over on the other thread, but Wednesday Night Prayer Meeting from this disk would make it. Dolphy's solo from that song is one of the most incredible I've ever heard committed to record. Its a Pentacostal revival and he's speaking in tongues.

I second this. Love these disks as well as Camofleur. "Upgrade and afterlife" also has the added bonus of having fantastic cover art, a photo by the great Roman Signer.
