Experimental music should be something that suggests a way of organizing your thinking, your attitude toward the world, which suggests that the world could be different.

Franz Schubert - String Quartet No. 14 D. 810 - "Death and the Maiden"
Thrift store vinyl with bad production - but still a pretty good performance of a great piece.

purchased:
toshimaru nakamura — dance music (bottrop-boy)
i didn't get as much from this as i was hoping, but i feel that a listen in a quieter room might help it out a bit.

toshimaru nakamura & annette krebs — siyu (soseditions)
this totally blew me away on first listen.

john cage — branches (edition wandelweiser)
i found this disappointing, i think i would have liked it better with more up-front sounds and a less resonant space.

matthew earle — document 07
i don't think it's unfair to call this "thin." i didn't make it through the last track yet.

arek gulbenkoglu — document 09
this was more instantly impressive. really cool noise texture and i appreciate the conciseness (though it would be nice to charge a little less for such a short album).

downloaded:
greg davis & jeph jerman — ku
i took to this one right away. great-sounding recording.

morton feldman — atlantis, string quartet and orchestra, oboe and orchestra (hathut)
mostly interested in SQ+O, i like that series.

metallica — death magnetic
the melodic singing defines "cringeworthy" but it's nice to hear the guys cranking out some new riffs that are really crunchy (not the granola kind). also, dynamic compression has reached new lows.

roberta flack — first take
ron carter just kills, i'll take this over richard davis on astral weeks.

Jean-Luc Guionnet, Seijiro Murayama - Le bruit du toit (Xing Wu)

On headphones late tonight this sounds fantastic.

is it me or does music always sound better when you don't have to get up in the morning?

Why, are you taking the day off, Richard? Or flying to Tokyo?

I like this better with each listen and with each small increase in volume.

Probably Valence, Dan. My old stereo rig cannot do his variegated drones justice, drats.
Niblock is performing at Lampo in Chicago in December, through a decidely better sound system than my own. If I have a job by then, we'll probably hit the road for that one.

Both the sounds and the back story of their creation merit a Lynch film. Nicely done, Joda.

Goh Lee Kwang - Cicadas 1 (Why Not)

This sounds good, very uplifting. Doesn't sound much like cicadas though?
