I'm an old grind-fan, but I'm not really uptodate with the last 5-10 years of the genre. I checked all the Relapse-bands on myspace, but I didn't think they sounded very interesting - maybe I'm looking for something less clean and more punk. Is anyone developing Brutal Truths style on their last two records (Kill trend suicide and Sounds of the animal kingdom - which I think are the highlights of grindcore as such)? What happened to the late 90's powerviolence/grind-scene?

What happened to the late 90's powerviolence/grind-scene?

I'm definitely not a connoisseur of the grindcore genre but I stumbled across a nice compilation of FEAR OF GOD material (Dave Phillips grind band from the late 80s) revisited by a truly amazing number of noisenicks ("The End of Fear of God", Tochnit Aleph, 2004)

I'm not familiar with FoG myself but just having RLW, Sudden Infant, Kevin Drumm, Yamatsuka Eye, Jason Kahn, Jim O'Rourke, Merzbow, Voice Crack, Runzelstirn & Gurgelstock, Haters, Russel Haswell, Zbigniew Karkowski and over 50 other acts fucking around with their music is something...

I'm curious: any thoughts on Fear of God from IHM posters? Any grindcore recommendation that may specifically appeal to noise or experimental music listeners?

I don't know the original recordings, but there is that Dave Phillips CD [R?] "The Hermeneutics of Fear of God" which consists of noisy reconfigurings of what I assume is Fear of God source material. It's good, nice little slabs of mal-intent.

Maybe too metal-y for you, but Defeated Sanity is pretty manic and worth checking out. I'm sure most anything else I'd suggest was mentioned in the other thread. I agree that those Brutal Truth albums are high points of the genre.

I just drove GridLink around on tour in August; 6 days in a row, opening for them in Boston and Providence (short harsh noise sets).

I just got the This Comp Kills Fascists vol 1, on Relapse, which has a bunch of new school power violence / grindcore bands, some of whom really impressed me on first listen, like Magrudergrind (no wonder the kids love them so much). Brian / GridLink plays drums for Kill The Client, and as such, they're lightening fast. He's also in Noisear, who I recommend to anyone who likes the first two Discordance Axis albums.

GridLink is definitely the best, to my taste, of what I've heard. I'd like to hear more modern grind that isn't rehashed napalm death riffs or spazz/crossed out derived. (GridLink sounds more like late era D.A. meets Slayer. Much more musically interesting, and ludicrously intense.)

also, Brutal Truth are a weirdly divisive band, personally I'm only really into Need to Control, but wish a more talented drummer played on it. Total Fucking Destruction is one of the worst live bands I've ever seen; it's been 8 years or so so who knows what they are like now, but Rich simply never hit the snare loud enough during the many fast parts and it was basically pointless.

I mean, I like the jazzy feel he has, but in the blast parts it comes off as if it might be incompetence rather than intentional? I know I read interviews with BT where they mentioned that Rich had never played a blast beat before joining the band and had no idea how to play one. On the new tracks on the relapse comp I like the parts where they aren't blasting way more than the blasting parts.

I've had the same impression of the few live-clips I've seen. Maybe he's a lousy live-drummer but he's still the best blast-beater on record . I love those chaotic blastbleats, in contrast to the too copied man-machine grinding of say terrorizer. Need to control hasnt really aged well though,....

i agree, seen them twice or so (total fucking destruction that is), and it's more like he's dusting the snare.

Well Extreme conditions is an absolute grindcore classic, but it's quite traditional and straightforward compared to their latter work. Some say Need to control is essential, but it sounds to 90's nowadays. On Kill trend suicide and Sounds from the animal kingdom they created their own genre - punkinfused insane chaotic blastbeatgrindcore - with excellent songwriting, great drumming and especially - fantastic and original sound. I haven't heard any new material since they reformed but they're all old and fat now so I don't expect much...

Fear of God were indeed awesome. I scored a live show of theirs off of Soulseek, which is a glorious 12 minute set of scarred tape. As far as their original releases being in print, I haven't seen any arround but an occasional bootleg.

DxIxEx from Japan are a pretty good grind band from the last few years. They had a couple of EPs out, one on Blurred recs. Another excellent power violence band from Japan is SU19b. I only have they're split with Jenny Picolo and a track from a Reality comp... but I know they have a semi recent album out, check out myspace.

Insect Warfare is a pretty good grind band from Texas, and play in the old school Terrorizer-era style...
