maybe you should specify fey female singer/songwriters... there are plenty of solo female artists that curling up in blankets to would not be the first thing that would come to mind (i'm not much of a fan, but, just to be difficult:)

I'm a typical male music fan in that there aren't a lot of female artists that I'm really into. Newsom is really special, though. I think she's one of the best songwriters and performers of our time.

Rokia Traore is not only making some of the most exciting music of the past decade, but I would nominate her for the most important musical figure of the past decade for the way she is single-handedly redefining women's roles in West African and Malian society. If divas like Oumou Sangare and Cesaria Evora (wonderful singers both) are like the Arethas of West Africa, Oumou is like the Ani DiFranco. Writes, produces, arranges, and packages her own music even though she does not come from a musical caste and is a <gasp> woman. And the music, rooted in Malian traditional instruments, her arrangements are fresh and free of cliche, and her recent collborations with Kronos Q. and Klangforum Wien (on a pseudo opera based on the last days of Mozart) show her pushing her music in ever new directions. She is quite literally a inspiration to millions of African young women.

. . . . members of the nobility such as Traoré are discouraged from performing as musicians. Traoré attended lycée in Mali while her father was stationed in Brussels and started performing publicly as a university student in Bamako. Unusually for a female musician in Africa, Traoré plays acoustic guitar as well as sings, and she uses vocal harmonies in her arrangements which are rare in Malian music. first album Mouneïssa (Label Bleu), released in late 1997 in Mali and 1998 in Europe, was acclaimed for its fresh treatment and unqualifiable combinations of several Malian music traditions such as her use of the ngoni and the balafon. It sold over 40,000 copies in Europe.
In 2000, her second album Wanita was released. Traoré wrote and arranged the whole album.

Only the 1st 2 Mego albums are any good, IMO. After that she starts making records with 'producers' and the music sounds like she has a lot less invested in it.

Be prepared for a long list - this is kind of my curatorial bag so I do a lot of research here. Most of these artists/musicians come from varied backgrounds and some do more collab work than solo but I've heard each of them solo and enjoyed it. Some I like more than others aesthetically, but all I think are significant in their own right. (Also - and tho' I know it belongs in I Hate Promotions and I will put it there soon - it's just an odd coincidence that this thread comes up right after I've started publicity on a new series I'm putting on in Baltimore (baltimoreperformance.com/lossolos) starts Sept '08.

Some of these are pretty off track from the original request, but I can second these recommendations, particularly the ones I've put an exclamation mark next to, as these come closer to your original request, Nebulabore.

I'll add Catherine Ribero to the pot, French early 70's gear, sits somewhere half way between Fontaine & Nico to my ears, although some of her stuff is more band oriented than solo.

I'm not deeply familiar with Kammerer's stuff, and have a quick question about some of it. There's a red CD on Charizma featuring a number of remixes/ production collaborations, which I forget the name of - worth checking out? I like about2/3 of The Magic ID, if that helps.
