Angels of Light - We are Him.

Or rather, Angel of Light according to the spine of the LP. I don't know how they screwed that up.

This is a fantastic album. I haven't really been paying attention to Angels of Light for awhile. I think I heard the last few couple of albums but I didn't really care for them. They just seemed ho-hum. This is pretty great though.

The vinyl comes with four bonus tracks, three acoustic versions of some early songs I think and then 'All Souls' Live Fragment' which sure seems like Swans.

Steve Reich Music for 18 Musicians performed by Grand Valley State University New Music Ensemble (Innova)

Very, very happily surprised by how good this is. I haven't done a side-by-side comparison with the ECM recording yet, but I'm thinking they're nearly identical in quality and recording style. I think, too, that I can say that I prefer it to the Nonesuch recording, which was good but a little too bright for me. The lengths are most similar between this edition and Nonesuch recording, though. I did listen to it as an SACD, which may have helped with my liking it, and it has the option for surround sound. With the new Nono Prometeo also available in surround sound, I'm kind of scrambling to find a nice rig for that or updating...

all three tracks are called Doremilogy with different numbers attached, but that description only could apply to the third track, not the first two:

OK, the new Taku Sugimoto has arrived now and I've played it a few times. God knows what to make of it!

I'm pretty sure the basic Do-Re-Mi structure is there across all three tracks, but they are each quite different. The first 21 minute piece begins with a brief rise through the scale, I think with an eBow on a guitar until settling I think at "Mi" (or should that be Miiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii........) for 20 minutes, unbroken apart from the odd wavering of the sound until for the last 60 seconds the note rises fast through the scales again.

The second and third pieces are for three multitracked guitars all played by Sugimoto, the second more sparse, involving the rising Dp-Re-Mi structure repeated with spaces between notes. The third track is similar but uses elongated sounds rather than individually picked notes.

All very oblique and a somewhat challenging listen.

I agree. I discovered that obscurity several years ago in the corner of a record store. It was a great find! From what I remember, that CD was one of several within a series of international experimental releases (i.e. each CD in the series was based upon the avant-garde "scene" from a different country).

there's a "From Russia" and "From Japan". the African one is the only one worth a buy, IMO.

there were rumours about that the others (possibly including "From Women" except some of the names on it are familiar) were fakes, all bennet himself or others on the uk scene. are the names on the japanese release at least familiar?

there is a pretty insistent rumour that the African one is fake. i'm sure others are not, i know some of the artists on Russian and the female ones.
