it appears to be a php conflict of some sort, possibly because surround and ihm are on the same server. trying a few things to fix this, but it hasn't been a swift process. apologies for all the downtime.

this seems to have just gone away. either my hosting company found and fixed a problem they don't plan to admit to, or there really was a nasty bot pageviewing us out of existence and he's now blocked.
