So I'll be coming up on 500 CDs soonish, and I'm looking to replace my ramshackle multiple-racks CD storage setup with something more... singular. Monolithic. What shelving options are out there for, say, 700-1000 CDs? Can I just go to IKEA and find something suitable, or will a huge CD rack be cost-prohibitive and hard to find? I'm not partial to any particular design, or to wood over metal or vice versa. A friend told me to just build my own, but I find myself wielding a hammer, on average, for hardly a few minutes per annum. Help.

the biggest ones i've seen in stores are those shoddy ikea-style deals. i have one that holds just under 500. i'd recommend building your own shelving. the store bought shelves never seem to hold any cd that isn't exactly 'normal' size correctly. plus i've run into shelf-sag problems. my grandfather built me a shelf about five years ago for my birthday that i LOVE. i should post pics of it.

if you insist on going out and buying one, i'd suggest finding a solid thrift store bookshelf or something.

Ikea only has those tall slim shelving units that run about $50 each, but only hold about 190 CDs. A friend bought four of them recently and they look nice together.

I like this, uh, Pottery Barn design, but it doesn't hold nearly the amount of CDs that you need stored:

The day Ikea stopped selling their shelf inserts (things that add an extra level to each shelf on their bookshelves) was a dark day in my life. All of my CDs are in one of the tall Ikea bookshelves and when I went to expand into a second shelf a couple years ago after filling the first one I went back and saw that they had stopped selling the inserts. If I had any space or tools to make my own I would, since it's just 4 pieces of wood hammered together, but damn I need more of those things.

Hmmm, I swear I saw those inserts last month at the Ikea in Arizona.

i built my own monster cd shelf- holds well over 1500 cds but it's just too damn massive. 4 foot wide, 8 foot tall. looks cool though.

i've already outgrown it, unfortunately

i'm up to three shelves that take up two walls. i'm a consumer whore!

i've taken to just building all my own record bins.

sometimes thou unfinished furniture places have cheap shelving systems that work with cds or vinyl
