sorry this is gonna seem random, but tell me about these people:

foucault, marcuse, adorno

say i want an interesting read in modern philosophy. what of these guys should i read. or if theres something good that you think would be interesting. also something not too hard that i can comprehend

Start with Plato, and then read Decartes.

none of those dudes are light reading, mike. you may want to get into the practice. foucalt and adorno, at least, will require a great deal of background reading.

after descartes, bertrand russel maybe?

hm cool. yeah i really couldnt finish this faulkner. guess ill pick up the republic tomorrow

buy a literary theory text book or something... and maybe a little handbook... i just went straight into the modern stuff (because of the courses i ended up taking)... i'm not very well versed at all in non-modern philosophy... but i find it's not too too difficult if you start with de Saussure, and the russian formalists and work your way forward...

Get the Allan Bloom translation. You may as well learn it from the Straussians....

You can't really understand Russell unless you've taken at least introductory logic.

You couldn't finish Faulkner so you're going to try to read Plato. Yeeah....

hey, plato is cool. i just picked up the republic. im only on the 8th page, but its infinitely more interesting than the 80 or so pages i read of faulkner.

the logic he uses in his definition of justice is way cool and fun

the plto book i got is like an anthology i guess. it has the republic, the symposium, parmenides, euthyphyro, aplogy, crito, and phaedo

i guess ill try & read al of them since i have them

finished book one. its really cool how the dialogue guides you through the reasoning behind his statements. a lot of the time its so streamlined that you can guess what hes gonna conclude before he actually gets there. pretty good read so far. too bad i dont know anyone in real life to talk about the book with

but i think you can get through some of basic Strauss ideas smoothly, for example

I don't really care for Plato, but it is kind of interesting to tear apart and critique the ironies inherent in his arguments, especially on those related to public speach and democracy.

just curious, but have you been listening to orchid?

eros and civilization by marcuse is worth reading, but if you're going to do so, check out beyond the pleasure principle by freud first.
