I fucking hate Spyware

I've got some bullshit homepage hijacker on my computer and can't seem to get rid of it. Can someone point me in the direction of a program that will get rid of it that won't cost me $30? I've downloaded some programs, but all they do is tell me the thing is there.

didn't work for me because i can't convince it to run on startup (i don't administrate this machine), but worked on the other computer i tried it on after adaware failed.

Spybot Search And Destroy

Google it - it's free and worked (once) for me.

the same thing is happening to me.

adaware does nothing but remove my cookies. i also have webroot spy-something and spybot search and destroy but nothing is working.

im gonna reinstall IE...if not, ill just use mozilla and opera as browsers.

Update your AdAware with the little globe button at the top. They're constantly adding new bugs to the kill list. I went from having 0 bugs found to 99 after updating.

i have adaware for don't remember how long. i update and scan almost everyday. it always works perfectly. was very helpful when i got something installed thru my windows player. and when i installed aim too.

thx...surprised i didnt even realize about that. i found more junk now that i ran it with the update but IE is still fucked.

luckily Mozilla is so awesome...im just gonna use that instead.

I used adaware when I had a similar problem, and I deleted all the suspicious programs/files it located, but I think I deleted something maybe important because I get an error message that some application can't be started whenever I start my computer.

Does anybody have any further advice on weeding out Spyware/Adware. I've used Ad Aware and Spybot Search & Destroy, and so far nothing has gotten rid of the crap I currently have on my machine, which is super-aggressive. It opens my browser on it's own in addition to hijacking my homepage and circumventing my popup blockers.

find the name of the files spybot won't remove, and google them. there are websites with specific info on what files you have to manually delete to get rid of some of that shit.

Thanks, I got this advice elsewhere too. This spyware I have is pernicious. I went through all the advice in the spyware thread, and it still didn't work. I'm working my way through a thread specifically on the about:blank virus. I'm getting in over my head here, but they're walking me through it.

Hm, I messed up.

During those steps I deleted iexplore.exe files that were identified by http://www.hijackthis.de" onclick= "window.open(this.href);return false; as being 'nasty'. Now I can't start Internet Explorer.

Can anyone tell me how I can fix the problem, reinstall IE, or reinstall another browser, keeping in mind that I can't access the internet from the machine in question?

Try this one:
webroot.com has a product called SpySweeper...it ain't free ($30 US) but scans for more stuff than any of the others (acccording to the Software Analyst at my job, who did a little Pepsi Challenge with a few scanners). SpySweeper also fixes the dreaded "about:blank" website hijacker.
And scan in Safe Mode if you can, there is less stuff running and it would take as long.
