And this is why. Fucking appalling. Though I'm sure T***p approves.

Re: I hate Facebook
I'm not trying to convince anyone and of course I wish IHM was as active as it was in its prime, but Facebook is still my current site of choice as it's been for a while now, warts and all. people who use it and complain should mostly have better 'friend' lists, or maybe know how to use it a little better.
Dan, you've never had a FB account, right? again, absolutely not trying to convince you, but it wouldn't be hard for you to quickly build a 'friends' list where multiple people who have seen the films you post about could comment on your writeups. Jonathan Rosenbaum was actually one of the first people I 'friended' on there, he constantly posts links to new and reprinted articles of his. Glenn Kenny also, he is a pretty big music fan and longtime DMG customer, nice guy...
and I'm not saying you should stop posting them here, FB isn't great at being searchable and discussion is almost always short-term, but it would be really easy to post them in both places.

That's right - Max (my son) has one, of course, as well as every other social network he can get his paws on. So I look on, amused / bemused..jon abbey wrote:Dan, you've never had a FB account, right?
Good points, all. Yes, of course, all the above is true - but I just feel I spend enough time as it is fielding triplicate cc emails and annoying text messages for work. I'm more afraid of myself to be frank - if it's as much fun as you say it is, I suspect I'd start spending more and more time bunfighting. I remember Bagatellen days! No, I enjoy writing my little paragraphs here over at IHF, and have no burning desire to reach out to millions morejon abbey wrote:it wouldn't be hard for you to quickly build a 'friends' list where multiple people who have seen the films you post about could comment on your writeups. If your 0 second attention span is anything to go by Mark, I reckon I'm better off where I amPiano Mouth wrote:Dan, you should start a Facebook account.

Re: I hate Facebook
Facebook has lost 53 BILLION dollars in the last four days.

I've never done Facebook. Always seemed a little high-maintenance for the benefits, and my kids' generation seems to be moving beyond it already. I'm sure it's been a great resource for those who've played, but I've never had any FOMO for Facebook.

Re: I hate Facebook
no, their market cap has gone down by $53B, big big difference. all that does is push the stock price back to where it was setting new highs last Aug/Sept, the question is how will this impact actual advertising and number of users going forward, and that seems to be more than I expected so far, given that none of that should have been the least bit surprising to anyone paying attention.Steve Minkin wrote:Facebook has lost 53 BILLION dollars in the last four days.
Re: I hate Facebook
FB is easily my favorite social media or message board ever, mostly for its range of contacts. this place was great in its prime, but yesterday I had a back and forth between Dennis Gonzalez and David Toop on my wall, no place else ever I think that could have happened.

Re: I hate Facebook
I just got active on FB myself. Ended up with nearly 1000 friends--many of whom I don't know at all--within a week. I've only had to "unfriend" two so far--one for making religious posts and one for saying stupid things about democracy, but anybody who annoys me I'll quickly dump. My initial sense is that it's very nice to have such a wide diversity of posts to look at--though perhaps that makes it a bit more like twitter.
On the downside, it is definitely a time suck, and I've already eliminated Messenger (its PM system) because it's busy, confusing and a memory hog on my phone. As I get the hang of the place, I think I'll check it no more than a couple times a day and kill no more than a daily half-hour there.
FWIW, I was disappointed that I couldn't find Prof. Warburton there.....

Re: I hate Facebook
I've always kept my friend list relatively exclusive. I have 66 now, and feel like THAT is too many. I spend most of my time there in my myriad snake groups. They are an invaluable education tools.

I do, just giving you shit.
I don't mind Facebook, but I absolutely refuse to use Twitter. Our Dear Leader is the perfect example of everything wrong with that particular form of communication.

Re: I hate Facebook
Hi IHM, I thought about you guys with this whole Facebook data harvesting thing. I was annoyed when IHM declined as the conversation moved to Facebook years ago (I don't do FB). It was nice here while it lasted.
I really dislike the social media metrics of number of followers and likes and whatnot on the user-to-user scale because it strikes me as a cynical way to represent human interaction. So it follows that the Cambridge Analytica scandal seems to show how far these metrics can go on a larger scale. And in an even more deeply cynical way.
Cheers, IHM

Yes I do miss a good source of new music discussion. However, the mention of Ulysses is appropriate because I finally finished it last year. Already the internet takes too much time and shortens my attention span and there are more books to get through. So it's for the best that I don't do FB, or even IHM really. So anyways, just making peace with the whole thingDan Warburton wrote:Given a choice between spending a couple of hours a day (yes, how much time do you lot spend on social media every day? I'm curious..) chatting online, even to fine folks like David Toop, and reading Ulysses, which I'm determined to get all the way through this time, or trying to get to grips with Schoenberg, or just watching a film (and even a Lloyd Kaufman Troma trashfest is more fun than the silly sniping I used to think was so important at Bagatellen), well, you know the answer.
Re: I hate Facebook
Yeah, the online bulletin board is all but dead. The only exception I know of is the Hoffman forums, but that's most because it is packed with the nearly autistic and clinically insane.
Re: I hate Facebook
not sure if you're limiting it to music boards, but Sons of Sam Horn is still doing pretty well, remarkably high signal to noise ratio especially given it's primarily a sports board.
