ok, here's the latest update on the ihm database.

the bad news : we've lost two very important tables -> phpbb_users, and phpbb_topics. so, we've lost the userlist completely, and also the names and dates of every topic.

the good news : we still have phpbb_posts_text, so we have the text from every post (~130,000 of them). unfortunately, without phpbb_topics, there's no telling who posted it, which topic it belongs to, and the date. the table does list the posts in order, so we have a vague idea of when they were posted, but that's about it.

the bottom line : we're going to put this database up in a searchable format, so if you know what text you're looking for you'll be able to find it. this way we can reconstruct important threads. anyone have any suggestions on a good application to allow users to search through database tables?

my idea is to have a simple search form with as many control parameters as seems reasonable, so that people in their free time can either dig through and find stuff they just want to read, or start reconstructing threads directed from the source.

even better would be to have some sort of extra information that we could apply to each post when it is dug up, such as original poster, original topic, and some sort of rating that could weight the search, eventually causing worthless posts to sink out of any sort of productive search. hopefully such an application exists, though i do not require that it necessarily be public domain or free.

still there? if so we can differentiate posts by users and topics and sub-forums with only losing information about user name and topic name. there would be just something like user "432" post in thread "10648". i think its more than enough and in such state it could be imported to the new board under some "archive" sub-forum.

i must say i have no idea if such software as mark describes exists at all.

the script which will import existing posts table to this board will be trivial (with few questionable points) and will provide all the search facilities you need. ofcourse only if "phpbb_posts" is still there
