now that it's entered a distinctive second era (or has this happened before?), I suggest perhaps a brief synopsis of the past __ years.
For those , like myself , who are unfamiliar with the origin of the board, this thread could be particularly enlightening.

Once upon a time, there were some dudes who read PitchforkMedia.com a lot, so they started a board because they all liked the music that Pfork talked about. Well, some people didn't really stay on topic and so there was a seperate music forum created, thus dividing the posters pretty evenly (one or the other, fellows!) into "Free-For-All" posters or "Music" posters. That board was around for about a year, but the traffic was so intense that the old host (http://www.dragondata.com -- some sort of webcam porn site, regularly) couldn't handle the bandwidth or incessant complaints stemming from the FFA's misbehaviour. So they pulled the plug (deservedly so, and probably for the better) and everyone split. All of the music forum people reconvened at the ExplodingPlastic.com board, but it didn't feel right. We weren't talking about the kind of music that ExPlas covers, and the locals (who, in fairness, were there long before us) didn't really take kindly to our types of music. (A few in Smithticular...)

So some stuff happened and mudd decided he didn't want to post there anymore, but if you've been reading, you know we couldn't really have this board without Mudd, so I went and started this place, which appears to be going pretty well. I'm just waiting for member #200 to join and I get an email from proboards.com saying "Ok, now pay up."

some later history is that after the linked above proboards version, Al Jones of Bagatellen graciously offered to host us, so we were at ihatemusic.bagatellen.com for a while before moving to noquam.com a few years back (2005?). partly because of this, we've picked up a bunch of members from Bags and Jazz Corner over the years, including the bulk of the posters in the newly minted sport section.

Which I think fits here even less than it did/does at jazzcorner. At least at JC the posters on the sports threads were people who were interested in the main board first.

yep, that's where i came from. heh, i even remember the op's name there - mich, right? you'd been gone for a few months and i asked a question about cecil taylor (or something similar maybe) on the dragondata board, and was linked here after no one really had any interest in talking about it whatsoever over there. "you belong here with these esoteric bastards". never looked back.

similarly, that board migrated many, many times to different servers, boards, etc.

I think a number of us will come around in time (and with restoration of material). The thread on Bill Dixon caught my eye, as did many others. Time may be the biggest constraint; I haven't been able to wade through the mounds of EAI material at JC, nevermind Bags.
