Re: I hate singer-songwriters

Chris Weisman, just got signed to Sub Pop. I thought the Feathers records were pretty well known.... The Chris Weisman thing on Sub Pop is a band called Happy Birthday that's led by that guy King Tuff. I just heard it last night and wasn't particularly thrilled by it And yeah, Feathers is pretty we...

Re: I hate singer-songwriters

Alex Lukashevsky (and his band Deep Dark United)
Kurt Weisman
Chris Weisman
The Shivers (Keith Zarriello)
Sonny Smith

All of them brilliant and more or less not receiving any kind of much-deserved attention/recognition.

Re: Horaflora South West US Tour

Anyone in austin who might possibly come out to this, I'm looking to borrow a mixer for the evening, as I'm collaborating with Ralph White, and we need to be able to send his banjo and kalimbas into my prepared speaker system... I don't need one the whole rest of the tour, so am a little hesitant t...

Re: Recording a free-form/improv drummer; Am I doing this right?

Hey Rob, You might try using different mics for loud and soft sounds and set them at different levels and not worry about the "soft mics" clipping during louder music as you can just fade them out in the mix at louder sections. I did this on a new recording where the only sounds are air-type sounds ...

Re: Keith Rowe & Mattin - October 2009 - A Coruña

well let's not get too far off track. could talk instead about the sugimoto/rowe/muller trio at amplify in japan, for example. actually i find taku's decision not to play in that performance very compelling, as much as i'm put off by mattin's predetermined role as musical non-participant. m This is...

Re: Keith Rowe & Mattin - October 2009 - A Coruña

But like I said... the question remains. it may, or it may not. you're asking people to weigh in on a possibly hypothetical situation without knowing any of the details. that's why I've asked radu to tell us if and when something like this happened, and if so, why he did it. You just said yourself ...

Re: Keith Rowe & Mattin - October 2009 - A Coruña

I have no reason to believe this person was lying (or dumb, blind, and deaf). well, I just e-mailed Radu to ask about it, I'll report back if he has anything to add. and there are other options besides lying, dumb, blind and deaf, just poor reporting, along the lines of Alvin Curran's wildly factua...

Re: Keith Rowe & Mattin - October 2009 - A Coruña

Someone once told me they saw Radu Malfatti performing in a duo (I don't know with whom) where he played nothing. I suspect Radu's motivation behind choosing not to play is coming from a wildly divergent place from Mattin trying to spur a political debate or "fuck shit up" and that his choice not t...

Re: Keith Rowe & Mattin - October 2009 - A Coruña

I'm interested in both sides of this argument's reaction to something. Someone once told me they saw Radu Malfatti performing in a duo (I don't know with whom) where he played nothing. I suspect Radu's motivation behind choosing not to play is coming from a wildly divergent place from Mattin trying ...

Re: Keith Rowe & Mattin - October 2009 - A Coruña

ie the broad concensus that this kind of stuff belongs in the domain of performance art, where it's already well past its sell-by date I'm sorry but if this actually is the broad consensus then I really don't understand why. Is it only in the realm of Performance Art that culturally inherited notio...

Francisco López - "Machines" 2xCD (Elevator Bath)

Been a long time since I was interested in his stuff but somebody gave this to me today and it's pretty terrific. Totally different from anything else I've heard of his, but then I haven't heard anything recent in a while either. Recommended.

Not sure if it's the most psychedelic, but I don't think I've ever heard a record that was more obviously the result of psychedelic drug use than the Holy Modal Rounders' "Indian War Whoop". :)

Re: Portraiture, recording and improvised music

Is it possible to lie or be truthful through a music, be it improvised or not? I think so. In fact, I think bands do this every day. After all, one day a guy's girl dumps him and he writes a sad song about it. Then he goes on tour and plays that song every night, trying to dredge up some semblance ...

Re: Portraiture, recording and improvised music

I'd definitely have to agree with this, and likewise I can't think of where I first heard it, it just seems to be something that's in the air. Actually after a gig once, I was getting a drink and a guy who had been in the audience came up and asked me "Do you think you can get a feel for someone's ...

Just wanted to let people know that this is finally available for purchase. There was a delay with the manufacturing that we hadn't anticipated, but the actual discs have arrived at last! Thanks to those who pre-ordered and apologies for the delay. http://shop.srasounds.com/product/nick-hennies-line...
