Georges Aperghis' work, "Recitations" especially, is one of the gold standards of adventurous vocal music.

Re: Why Improvised Music is so Boring

i think, actually, that the "playing the role of generic musicians in the background" seems to further some of the themes of the piece, in that it kind of retroactively gives a power to the pre-diego section, demonstrating that improvised music works best in a certain listening context and with a c...

Re: Recent purchases redux

Just picked up this Phillip Schulze 2xLP + CD box set:

If the sample track here is any indication then it's going to be one hell of a ride. Anyone heard of him before? Found this after a friend who got a review copy recommended it to me.

Re: Nick Hennies "Psalms" on Roeba Records 10/26

the c&h recording is a live performance, this is a studio recording. Not only this, but the c&h recording was a very early performance and the music has evolved and solidified much more since then, and most importantly, that recording is lacking any "room sound" which is really where a lot of the a...

I won't be able to go to this, but just out of curiosity... how is the fest able to accommodate 15-20 performers/sets a night? Is everyone playing ultra short sets or something?

Earth's last album, "The Bees Made Honey in the Lion's Mouth" is perfect at sunset.

Also, if you're looking to go the audiobook route (I really don't think anything passes the time better), I can highly recommend Henry Rollins' tour diaries from his early years in Black Flag.

Yeah, I am on a pretty tight schedule as I have to be in Detroit by the 6th for a wedding. Based the rest of the dates around the IMA show on the 31st. Really excited about everything, though I wish I had time to go more places (like Minneapolis). Another time, for sure.

More restrained and subtle than "Flock & Tumble" and "Amnemonic Site" but no less fascinating. Totally essential.
