Re: Mark Fisher on the Slow Cancellation of The Future
" "Believe" featured a pioneering use of the audio processor software Auto-Tune as a vocal effect, which became known as the "Cher effect". 1998 ?" And from memory it (Believe) wasn't exactly a ''shock"*... but audio processing from about the introduction of phasing was a feature of popular music......

AUS DEN SIEBEN TAGEN
AUS DEN SIEBEN TAGEN Karlheinz Stockhausen May 1968 May 1968 was a significant date for many reasons but for Stockhausen it was a personal crisis. He went on a hunger strike on the 6th of May after realising his wife had left him. On the second day he resolved to die by his own hand. Then something ...

Re: John Tilbury in proto-MIC
Bailey was part of a series of performances, I only remember seeing him once. I was a first year painting student and my friends (in the know) said this really great guitarist was due to perform. I remember the performance – Bailey hardly touched his guitar but used his chair to make noises on the t...

Re: Aesthetics and Post-tonal Music
If you forgive me for continuing. Firstly if philosophy is subject to logical or scientific refutation much of it – or for some all of it, would be consigned to be 'nonsense'. That it isn't by many is that it's thought to have a value which is not subject to such verification. This accounts for why ...

Re: Aesthetics and Post-tonal Music
OK I think I follow your reasoning for wanting such definitions was to address the proposition of the kind- “I claim ...” and look for internal inconsistencies..? “Raffman’s syllogism is not salvageable: it contains at least one false premise, and is invalid to boot.” But I don't think inconsistenci...

Re: Aesthetics and Post-tonal Music
Music = df. any event intentionally produced or organized to be listened to that either (a) has one or more of the sonic features of pitch, rhythm, melody, harmony, or counterpoint, or (b) is intended to be listened to for such features. So Noise HN HNW is not music. (Vomir The Rita et al) Or conce...

Re: John Tilbury in proto-MIC
Back in 1972-3 Tilbury was a visiting lecturer at Falmouth School of Art and performed improvised material. One I remember was a version of Cant Buy me Love. Others included Bailey... as well as Harrison Birtwistle... Alan Hacker..

Re: Reich!
I can understand the “operatic” voice being at odds with minimalism – but what about liturgical singing? I’ve also wondered how English change ringing relates to Reich’s work?

Re: Reich!
If you go back to my original post – re the amplification of the voice – I said “Well – let that one go.”.. my real problem was with the other comments and the performance – which I think others have shown was technically lacking. “If you’re writing an opera about, let’s say, President Eisenhower, a...

Re: Minimalism
Oh I’m sorry – I was trying to limit my word count and not present a PhD thesis for you to review. Hence it might sound arrogant. But if as you argue “that what is received from sound or visual stimulus can't be predicted, prescribed, or circumscribed easily (if at all...)” then there is an answer –...

Re: Minimalism
OK I gave a sloppy account of my definition by using ‘aesthetic’. I think Minimalism differs from what could be called more ‘conceptual’ work in that the artwork relies on minimal artistic input in manipulating the materials, allowing the actual materials to become obvious to an aesthetic response. ...

Re: Minimalism
OK guilty of introducing Wandelweiser – but it was only as a similar example – provocative I suppose. Does anyone know when / where the term was applied in music – wiki gives 1970 - Michael Nyman … I’m familiar with it pejorative use in art by Richard Wollheim in his essay 1965 – “Wollheim coined th...

Thanks for that post. Very interesting, and makes sense. I must admit to also losing interest around the two trains period onwards.. well the general trajectory of Minimalism into some mixed media / opera fest.

Re: Minimalism
yes, that is a Radu interview from 12 years ago. if you'd like to ask him about his opinions on Cage more directly, I'd be happy to give you his e-mail, otherwise you can trust me that in recent years he has decided he is not especially connected to the Cage lineage, and certainly not as much as ev...

Re: Reich!
The thing that puzzles me here is why you'd spend money and effort to attend a celebration of a composer you seem to hold in utter contempt. Presumably you quite enjoy being irritated? I do not hold Reich in contempt at all. I greatly admire his early work. I found it amazing when I first heard Vio...
