preamps for contact mics

I've been fiddling about with my contact mics more and more recently and have finally worked out why The sound is so thin: I'm using a standard preamp. So, what do you guys suggest/use? Most piezo preamps are the kind you're meant to bolt onto acoustic guitars. Will that do? I'm not really up to mak...

Re: Concert at Cafe Oto - Tilbury, Patterson et al

I saw Tilbury at OTO with Marcus Schmickler last year. One of the best OTO gigs I've seen. I will definitely be there.

^ Hmmm... Is at all conceivable that the above member is somehow related to this band? Especially since this band is so far outside of this forum's standard subject matter?

Re: Getting into No Input with No Money

I got a Mackie ProFX8 for about £70 and that has served me well. I usually throw a couple of fx pedals/units in the way and have another mixing desk now to add into the fray, but I've also done performances with just the ProFX8 and gotten really diverse sounds out of it.

Re: Integrated ideology in music

Apologies if this has been dealt with here before, but speaking of Eddie's writings in terms of "wading through nonsense" strikes me as a bit overweening, especially at the same time as admitting to not having read the books in full... I mean, I find myself disagreeing with much of what he says, an...

Re: Integrated ideology in music

Dan, you're right in what you say about Birtwistle's music coming closer to Stravinsky's conception than anyone one else of note right now and of course part of my critique of his work is based upon the fact that I don't like his later work (I do quite like some of his early pieces). I'm going to en...

Re: Integrated ideology in music

Aggghh, the dreaded S-word!! My point was simply that those features of an artist's work that allow us to identify it immediately - style, for want of a better word - are only developed through long periods during which not much is changing. The waters are still, rather than stagnant. I'd agree wit...

I don't think that quote justifies musical stagnation. It just states that it happens.

Re: Integrated ideology in music

So if you heard a piece of music on the radio or somewhere that totally blew you away you wouldn't trust your reactions, you'd need to know the underlying concept? And then, if there wasn't one, would another piece that sounded less exciting but with a cute concept behind it be "better" in your boo...

Re: Integrated ideology in music

The "this" meaning your interest in unconventional instruments, James? What interests me is the "should" - you sound either unsure of what you're doing or as if you need the advice of others (hell, do whatcha like, don't ask me what you should do!). Amongst other things yes. I was simply acknowledg...

Re: Integrated ideology in music

some of the stated aesthetic choices feel superfluous to the end result. my ideology is more "anything goes," without placing too much importance on rigid or pre-conceived processes. the process could be interesting, but emphasizing it feels like an unecessary conceit. some of the best "art," or mu...

Integrated ideology in music

I'm not entirely sure that the title makes sense, but I don't think I can do better... What I'm getting at is the idea of every element in a piece of music being a part of the ideology of its creator. For example, I have a rather lo-fi aesthetic and prefer to reject traditional instruments (not an e...

I have a 5 pin to phono lead that I don't use if it's of any use to you. If so, PM me.

I managed to pick up a copy at the Murmuration concert @ Cafe Oto. Really beautiful stuff on here. I haven't been able to listen to each disc through yet, but what I've been able to listen to has definitely interested me enough to work through them all. The liner notes are a wonderful accompaniment ...

Re: Getting gigs

Thank you both! I'm London based, so I've always considered myself quite fortunate in terms of geography for this sort of thing (the various venues in Dalston etc. that permit this kind of stuff) and in terms of attending shows, turn up to as much as time will allow, but it's only recently that I've...

Getting gigs

This is a question for those among you who are currently active in performing around the EAI, Free-improv, Experimental scene(s). How do you go about getting sets? Those in more populist fields can obviously just trawl venues handing out demo tapes etc. but this is a rather niche thing. Not many ven...

Re: Demolish Serious Culture

Want something technically difficult? Try Xenakis's Formalized Music . As I type there is a copy of that book to my left. I took it from a library in hopes of finding new ways to control material, or at the very least better understand Xenakis' own methodology. I have achieved neither. But I do thi...
