It was way too mellow and not engaging, I have to agree.

Re: Unsanctioned EAI
I love maximalist music in general but as far as the electroacoustic vein of it goes, I can only think of composers like Paul Dolden and MC Maguire, which create fascinating soundworlds but do not typically feature improvisation. Big fan of the ensembles mentioned above however. There's also a group...

Re: Best of 2014
Definitely a good year. Haven't heard the new Wall/Rodgers yet and I have a feeling it'd be a contender, otherwise my list'd go like this (top 2 spots are immutable, the rest are all pretty great in their own way) : 01 Paul Dolden: Who Has The Biggest Sound? 02 Secret Chiefs 3 (Ishraqiyun): Perichor...

Re: Unaltered acoustic instruments + electronic experiments?
Forgot to mention: similar to Dolden in density is another Canadian composer's work, MC Maguire. His pieces follow a basic template: virtuosic acoustic soloist navigates a tricky score over a bed of samples, electronics and various other heavily layered interjections. Lasting about half an hour each...

Re: Unaltered acoustic instruments + electronic experiments?
For compositions with massed strings (and many other unaltered acoustic instruments) of great density, I can think of no better than Paul Dolden. No electronics though, so may not fit the requirement, but unusual miking, alternative temperaments (Just Intonation and many other microtonal approaches)...

Re: the IHM metal thread
Funny you say that, I was just listening to Jeremiah Cymerman's podcast today featuring Andrew Hock (Castevet, Psalm Zero) and he was claiming that most "extreme" metal bands have at most three or four good albums in them. And then they should just stop. Makes sense for a lot of groups I think... he...

Looking forward to that.
If you like the noisier end of things, there's a new (and I heard final?) Wold just out on Profound Lore: Postsocial. Gotta snag a copy soon, if it's anything like Freermasonry...

Re: kevin drumm
Gotta agree wholeheartedly with those picks -- especially love the RLW collaboration. My favorite KD release however is by far Reconquer Sleep or Disappear , that's the first one with Tom Smith -- however I'm a diehard TLASILA fan so maybe I'm biased. Of the ones they did together (though again, tha...

Re: the IHM metal thread
New Triptykon, Melana Chasmata, sounds fantastic. Nothing groundbreaking but as far as instant gratification goes, it does the trick. I've got the second Funereal Presence cued up next, The Archer Takes Aim, and if it's anything like the eponymous debut it'll be quite satisfying...
