Re: Recently Watched Films 2020

this was filmed in Ricardo Bofill's postmodern Espaces d'Abraxas housing complex in Noisy-le-Grand just outside Paris. Came across his name for the first time when I saw L'Ami de mon amie , where some of his work in Cergy Pontoise is featured, and Rohmer turns what was a brand new city at the time ...

Re: Recently Watched Films 2020

It took me a few years after a first inconclusive attempt to enjoy Coogan and Brydon's banter and impersonations over luxury food. Then I enjoyed it very much. Coogan's fictional alter ego is particularly obnoxious in that and, I've always intuited since then, pretty close to the real one. I was pro...

Re: Quick Qestions for ya

Yes, Kael is always a fun read. As Dan said, I like Armond White, even though a tendency to be ridiculous developed over time, he still manages to be interesting. I read David Thomson at times but I'm not a big fan. Manny Farber looks good but his texts are too old or adresses a rather limited canon...

Re: Recently Watched Films 2020

I have no other choice but to play the "mauvais coucheur" part, sorry pals, and based on my faulty memory at that. While I commend the film's ambition, I remember it as the kind of film that is just a bit too full of itself, and not much else save for the rave scenes, which I found just a bit too yo...

- and you've probably seen that a spanking new 720 rip of the director's earlier I am 20 is now up for grabs at the usual place.. Re: Top Ten Lockdown Films

I spent some time in Marseille, which is not necessarily quieter (that damn mistral along with the sun in the summer) before coming back to Paris. The lockdown is delaying some plans to leave for the reasons you're mentioning. Grande banlieue is somewhat insulting for a very nice little city like Ch...

Re: Top Ten Lockdown Films

Hi Dan, I hope the family's well. It might be time to check out Mariano Llinás' La Flor . Merely 14 hours (that I went to see at the cinema last year). A warning : the first small movie, a riff on mummy movie, is one of the least successful - a musical comedy of some sort wraps up the first part in ...

Re: Recently Watched Films 2020

Fan of Perfect Lives myself, though I haven't seen the film yet. There is one excellent reviewer over at rym who seems to be well-versed in music (as in, he studied it and knows the ropes), which I am not, solfegically speaking, and who can't endure Blue 'Gene' Tyranny noodlings and prefer the "Priv...

Re: Recently Watched Films 2020

Was planning to see Khrustalyov, My Car! soon but I'm no in hurry to watch that one, nor fooled by the enthusiastic. It reminds me of checking out Marketa Lazarova which looks a bit similar in that it seems (is) overly long and set in the Middle Ages. [(i]Uzak[/i] was on my watchlist by the way I do...

Schepisi is a rather underrated filmmaker in a middlebrow (hesitating to use that word which could sound a bit condescending), noble kind of way, and his most renowned film, Six Degrees of Separations , is the one I struggle the most with Not on KG, just looked (since it's freeleech time, good oppo...

Re: Recently Watched Films 2020

I find Ford's somewhat stilted formalism and expressionism to be quite riveting, which is a bit of a unpopular opinion, in The Informant , not to mention Victor McLaglen's performance and physicality. That scene when he is ready to strangle the blind man, before realizing that, well, he is blind is ...

Re: Recently Watched Films 2019

Thanks for the tip, Dan. I'm cautious and tend to focus on the featured torrents (missed La Dernière Femme , if it was one). As for Ferreri, next in line is El pisito . Would like to write something about I Don't Care If We Go Down in History as Barbarians , even though Armond White's review and tha...
