Documentaries
Thought I'd start a thread on good documentaries, plus web links, dvds etc. A few of my favourite old bbc warhorses are up on Youtube (search for these) The Ascent of Man (J. Bronowski) The Body in Question (Jonathan Miller) Ways of Seeing (John Berger) The Shock of the New (Robert Hughes) Born Talk...

Re: epic length pieces
I assume most of you have come across Jem Finer's Longplayer: http://longplayer.org/what/overview.php The idea is that, in some form, the composition is realised for 1000 years.
Great to listen to when you run out of other things.

Re: Restricted Setup Challenge (edit: Due 5/10!)
Thanks for such a slick site Snailed - this is mysterious and deep stuff. ... Also, it frustrates me that the question seems to presuppose a binary divide between compositions and non-compositions. Anybody who has been involved with open score compositions and restricted free improvisation should kn...

These are great! Thanks for these, good listening.orangettecoleman wrote:An hourlong improvisation broken into 5 tracks. It's just a guitar, two delay pedals, and a pitch shifter pedal, no overdubs or anything.

Re: I Hate Freelancing
Lol at the prospect! (Though, seriously, it would be good to try and establish a collective of young people doing this - I mean, surely there's a need for a new wave of concert-installations; practice seems to be, at the moment, a little polarised?). Anyway, I study music, which is mostly essay base...

Re: I Hate Freelancing
Nice one! Not that I have anything to offer, but would be fascinated to watch whatever progress you might have (as a current undergrad meself). Have been eyeing the MMus Creative Practice course at Goldsmiths, so would be great to learn what kind of current these sound-based things have out there in...

^ Thanks! Very much enjoyed the mandolin material as well - great timing and weight and space.
Really liked mp3 from d.at too - nice sounds, assuming no-input mixer etc.?

Modernism/postmodernism
Just wondered if there were any thoughts regarding the position of the variety of improvised music usually discussed here (EAI, post-AMM work, mixing with sonic art ....ish) relative to the categories modern/postmodern. Is such a distinction appropriate, relevant or useful? I find the question quite...

Re: Criticism & Sound Art / Experimental Music
In the 20th century, visual art became nonrepresentative, and the body of criticism that emerged from that development reflects it. Fictions were also produced that undermined immersion or that made indeterminate the ontological level of the story, or that had unreliable narrators. There are parall...

Having a nice experience listening to a couple things at once, which is always nice. This time it is a sample of Bill Fontana's River Sounding installation along with Sss by Taku Sugimoto, Martin Siewert & Burkhard Stangl, from the third CD from the Improvised Music from Japan box. http://www.frieze...

I don't know whether BBC radio gets out abroad online (I think it does), but anyway there was a nice Radio 3 programme with music by Skempton, Feldman, Cardew and Wolff, featuring John Tilbury, which is worth a listen... http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00sbwcw/Hear_and_Now_BBC_SSO_Skempton_Car...

Re: Carnality in improvisation
I thought one of the reasons Rowe decided to lay the guitar flat (see here: http://vimeo.com/3799720 ) was apparently to get away from the individualistic expression of the abdominally oriented guitar. Presumably, Rowe's lack of 'phallic charge' or whatever, is, seen from his perspective, a virtue. ...
