Re: art exhibits

I learned a new word today, anamorphosis, a seemingly distorted representation intended to be seen from a certain angle or in a mirror. Something that you CAN'T see when you're seeing everything else in the painting, but something you CAN see when you can't see anything else in the painting. The we...

Re: Recently Watched Films 2018

Can someone tell me whether it's worth paying $20 to see The Room, or if the 15 minutes worth of clips on youtube are sufficient? To me, it looks a lot like the Warhol Dracula/Frankenstein movies, full of bad plotting, worse acting and strange accents, if maybe with less sex. So I get the camp valu...

Re: EDM

people seem to be conflating EDM with IDM. EDM: Electronic Dance Music - mostly modern club "bangers" optimized for the dance floor. IDM: Intelligent Dance Music (such a terrible acronym) - stuff like Autechre, Aphex Twin etc i.e. esoteric electronica often with weird beats and generally without any...

Re: Favorite Soundtracks

off the top of my head: both Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Eaten Alive have great junk-noise industrial-sounding synth soundtracks. The Blues Brothers love the use of Tubular Bells in the Exorcist John Carpenter's homemade synth scores to films like The Thing, Assault on Precinct 13, Prince of Darknes...

Is the Nolan remake any good? .
Just another pointless US remake of an already decent film, and a Chris Nolan remake to boot. Its about as terrible as you would expect.

Re: Favorite Shakespeare and Shakespeare-inspired films

Cool thread. Some middle-of-the-road suggestions from me below (I'm no expert): Jubal is a pretty great western retelling of Othello I'm quite partial to Polanski's bleak "The Tragedy of Macbeth". It also has a pretty crazy soundtrack to boot - violin, guitar drums, oboe, cello and vcs3! Not a fan o...

Re: Recently Watched Films 2015

The Golden Fang...I liked Inherent Vice quite a bit. Paul Thomas Anderson is pretty great. I don't recall seeing a bad movie of his, although I haven't seen Punch Drunk Love yet. He's been a roll with his last few films, but Magnolia was a piece of shit (what a stupid ending). There Will be Blood, ...

Re: Recently Watched Films 2015

The ones I really like are the aforementioned Spirited Away and Totoro as well as Porco Rosso and Castle in the Sky. The rest I have problems with. I've only seen a few of the other Ghibli features but none of them were as good as the Miyazaki films. Grave of the Fireflies was ok.

Re: Recently Watched Films 2015

not sure how it seems a few decades later, and you and I don't agree much anyway, but Heathers seemed light years above those other two at the time. also funny that Christian Slater is still basically playing the same character, in Mr. Robot currently. I think they all hold up pretty well, but Heat...

Blood for Dracula (1974) all the way!

Recently watched Ex Machina which was pretty good, one of the few sci-fi films with a bit of content to match its ambitions.
