Re: Which films have you turned off before the end?
Another one my wife and I turned off after about five minutes was Jacques Demy's Une chambre en ville. I enjoy musicals, but when every line of dialogue is sung...I just can't do it. Anyone else seen this?

Re: Which films have you turned off before the end?
I've never understood the fascination for Satantango - it seems to be one of those films you "have to" see if you want any avant garde streetcred (as was the case with Marienbad and Eraserhead when they came out). I guess this makes me a non-member, because I haven't seen Eraserhead or Satantango (...

Re: Which films have you turned off before the end?
Good question, Dan, and one I sometimes struggle with because it seems like I don’t often have the visceral negative reactions that some have, particularly with films. For example, the films Lutz mentions – Last Year in Marienbad , Werckmeister Harmonies, Solaris , and Citizen Kane – are all films I...

Re: Recently Watched Films 2017
I like Malle's American films I just watched God's Country , his documentary about Glencoe, MN, and came away thoroughly impressed by his ability to be empathetic with the camera. Some 30 years on in the Trump era, it's hard not to notice that he had his finger on something about what was stirring ...

Thanks for posting this. I was completely unaware of these accusations, which are certainly troubling. Always important to broaden our perspective, for better or ill, particularly on such an iconic figure as Feldman.

Re: Top five favorite Another Timbre discs
I would concur that Lost Daylight and Wandelweiser und so weiter are certainly major touchstones for the label I hesitated to put that in my top five, because I recall I found it rather uneven - though before shooting myself in the foot again, I admit I should go back to listen to it again to remin...

Re: Top (10?) threads of IHM
I for one would be interested in hearing more peoples' views on the live performances / installations / festivals etc. they take in. The write-ups of e.g. the Amplify sets have always been fascinating. Was there a dedicated thread for live write-ups? For example, did anyone attend the performance of...

Re: Top five favorite Another Timbre discs
Great idea for a thread. I would concur that Lost Daylight and Wandelweiser und so weiter are certainly major touchstones for the label, but with almost a hundred releases and the mix of composition and improvisation (and all hybrids between), there are a lot of ways one could think about it. I've f...

As a long-suffering Bears fan, Forte was always the bright spot in the last five years or so. He never looked fast but before you knew it he picked up 8, 10 yards at a go. He kind of glides more than runs. Was sad to see him go.jon abbey wrote:I was dead wrong about Forte, he looked great today.

Re: I Hate America
I'm sure he did something in between those years you mentioned, but I agree that The Apprentice show took it to another level. Before his birther 'advocacy' and presidential 'aspirations', the two things I associated with Donald Trump were The Apprentice and, before that, his early 90s affair with ...

Re: I Hate America
also every time I type a sentence that includes the word "Trump", I feel dumber. +1 on this. The real tragedy of this election is that the discourse seems lower than ever (yes, yes, we say that every time but, recency bias be damned, it feels particularly true on this go-round) and real systemic is...

Can't say much more, really, because I haven't seen enough. Paging our man in Finland, Matt Wuethrich – any thoughts, Matt? Seeing this in a grimy theater in Kotka, a seaside city in southern Finland, when it first came out is one of my favorite cinematic experiences ever. That of course was helped...

Off the top of my head, with brief content notes: The Killing of a Chinese Bookie (not from the gangsters' perspective but from the perspective of someone tangled up with them) Gomorrah (a society poisoned by gangsters) Rififi (jewel thieves) Le Cercle Rouge (jewel thieves) Le Samourai (hitman) Prin...

Re: Recently Watched Films 2014
Unless you want to count things like Alien , Saw and Cube I was actually debating if Alien fit my category or not. What I'm after is the way the setting compresses all the action more or less to dialogue and interaction, so parts of Alien do fit. Haven't seen the other two and I can't say they're a...
