Re: Does It Matter Whether We Own Music?
Something else...GZ Press, where a large percentage of records are pressed that we buy. Unless you pay for the highest package (not even sure it is available anymore...mastering records is a real craft, and they might not employ anyone to do it anymore), they use Direct Metal Mastering, and from wha...

Re: Does It Matter Whether We Own Music?
I actually contend that it would be higher fidelity coming from a digital master because the only distortion added would be from the playback equipment. If the source were analog, you’d essentially be doubling up on the distortion. First from the source, then from the playback equipment. My point w...

Re: Does It Matter Whether We Own Music?
Trust your ears, not specs. And, obviously, listening depends on lots of things. Playback gear. State of mind. Mood. Expectations. Skepticism. You know, the psychological game. A person who thinks all speakers sound the same...all amplification sounds the same...all beer tastes the same...all wine t...

Re: Does It Matter Whether We Own Music?
A couple of points to what has been posted. 1) There's no death to high fidelity in digital. While compression, loudness, and digital tools have been misused and abused, there's an argument to be made that digital is another level of high fidelity. High-resolution transfers that are at least technic...

Re: What are your favorite releases of 2016?
Lots of my favorite names released something this year, but many of them are simply good and do not rise to the ranks of "best of". To me, "best of" implies I want to recommend these things to you. I'm not going to bother pushing something that is merely okay. So far, this is how my list is stacking...

Re: Bring the (harsh) noise !
that is the same record Bill and Richard recommended upthread a bit. I don't listen to much noise these days but I might have to check that one out. Whoops. I didn't see those inclusions for some reason. If you put that album through a spectrum analyzer and then used the sharpest scalpel to shave a...

Muslimgauze - Chasing the Shadow of Bryn Jones, 1983–1988 box (it's too bad this wasn't an affordable CD box set) I liked, but not deserving of a best of: Clock DVA - Clock 2 (great sound and sounds; the Uwe Schmidt remix moves beautifully) Hal Hutchinson - Wreckage Installations & Metalworks Tehom ...

Re: Bring the (harsh) noise !
but anyway a few thoughts: I'd find it more interesting to follow if the textures were more "perforated". The simplest way would be irregularly muting fractions of a second, every fraction of a second. Or taking a cartridge and hectically scratch over everything near you. something like this I .II ...

Re: Steve Roach and ethno ambient recommendations, please
maybe O.Rang "Herd of Instinct" ? wonderful album, but not sure that's what you meant Thank you. I gave it a listen on youtube. The instrumentation isn't of this style. That almost sounds like post-rock, or whatever it is they call it. Maybe ethno ambient is an outdated term. It's been around a lon...

Re: Best Albums of 2012
I listened to almost no new experimental music this year. I have too much I've only heard 1-3 times to be adding more to the stacks. A high percentage of my listening was unofficial live recordings. An unusual amount of death metal, too. I don't care for death metal much. definites: Autopsy - new so...

Steve Roach and ethno ambient recommendations, please
I'm back in an ethno ambient phase, and I'm looking for Steve Roach recommendations in particular. I'm open to any artist and album that might be found extraordinary, though. Feel free to educate. Let's start off with what I do know. I'm a big fan of Tuu. Also well schooled in Hybryds, Voice of Eye ...

Re: Now Playing
Hiroki Sasajima - Monogenic 2009 I did a search, and his name hasn't been mentioned even once. I'm surprised. I'd blame it on small pressings, but that doesn't seem to impede other artists of lesser craft and quality. I'd say this is somewhere between JGrzinich (Intimations, perhaps) and some tones ...

Fushitsusha - The Time is Nigh 1997 - so far, that's the only Haino, or Fushitsusha, that rivals 15/16 in sun-like, unfathomable energy - one of the all-out heaviest releases I've heard in a LONG time - almost too much at once.
