Re: I hate Facebook

I can't read the whole article, as I am quite bored by the US election and politics, which are dominating my non-US news sources. Also, it hardly makes a difference whether a Democrat or a Republican wins the election, and I agree with John Pilger that Clinton would have been worse than this cretin....

Re: now playing

"Rhumba" by Hanan and Fairuz Many years ago a kind and generous person shared with the world "over 50 old 78rpm records with 1930's-1950's Arabic Pop and Swing music". Unlike many nice corners of the internet that have disappeared since the time of 56k modems, this one is still where it was then: h...

Re: Last song you had on repeat for more then 10 times?

I don't think I've ever had any song on repeat for more than 10 times in succession, but "Let It Happen" by Tame Impala is the last song I had on repeat many times. Before that it was Billie Eilish, her 2017 EP Don't Smile at Me and the 2019 album When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? . Billie wa...

Re: Undercanonized African Records

I find "underecognised" in the definition of this topic (given its context, this forum) somewhat objectionable, and many records mentioned in the thread are not "underecognised". So I assume that African music that's had some mainstream reception (in the West) fits as well, and I wholeheartedly reco...

Re: This might look like an eai posting, but it isnt

Richard Barrett wrote:I like the term "musics", it's more general and less loaded than "styles" or "genres" - and doesn't indicate a denial of a unifying concept any more than "people" does with "person".
But "musics" is to "music" what "peoples" is to "people".

Re: This might look like an eai posting, but it isnt

Derek Bailey's Improvisation: Its Nature and Practice in Music is not a book about free improvisation, as its title makes clear, and I don't think it's either a result or a proof of the existence of some specialised discourse specific to free improvisation, or even improvisation more generally.

Re: This might look like an eai posting, but it isnt

i can only imagine the distinctions of free improvisation were argued exhaustively in their time. it's true that today we don't argue much about what's free or not, but the field is pretty mature. at some point one of the participants felt strongly enough to write a book about it, so surely there w...

Re: Sexism in Cinema

the part that i find sexist is when he seems to say "the girl is the one who has most made me lose my erection in a long time". That's absolutely ridiculous, and you can be sure he's not saying that. I guess you're relying on "the possible translation of the infinitive" that ttg so generously provi...

Yes, although dozens left the screening I attended, which I guess adds a funny twist to the whole experience, in retrospect especially. What kind of subtitles did you have?

Re: Recently Watched Films 2011

Film Socialisme looks promising on the surface, only I'm afraid it's going to be another 100 minutes of endless literary allusions and talk, talk, talk. How on the surface? And what makes you think it consists of "endless literary allusions and talk, talk, talk"? That was sort of the problem I had ...

Re: Jacques Rivette

is the original any better? I think that's very likely. As I understand, the French word might primarily refer to behaviour, and presumably, as Rivette is talking about her on the screen, that would be a comment on her acting. If that's the case, "slovenly" is an unfortunate translation, but "limp"...

Re: Why Improvised Music is so Boring

could you please define what you mean by "acoustic structures" as opposed to "musical structures"? They are not opposed, but the former is a far wider concept. Acoustic structures are really everywhere--in beehives, in factories, on the streets, in speech, and so on. I'm of course not disputing tha...

Re: Why Improvised Music is so Boring

Music in which the priority is (or sounds as if it is) interaction between sounds rather than interaction between personalities. I probably don't understand this very well, but I think the presence of strong musical personalities and their interaction is evident in the music I value most and that "...

Richard Barrett wrote:What seems to be rejected is the idea that ego-displays aren't appropriate to this kind of improvised music.
Which kind of improvised music? And what do you think about this idea of "ego-displays"? Is rejecting it good or bad to you?
