Re: Cage articles (Cage & the CIA?)

There's a good essay or book about this somewhere but I can't quite recall what it is I wonder if the book might be Who Paid the Piper?: The CIA and the Cultural Cold War (1999), by Frances Stonor Saunders, the author of the article you link in your second post. There's also a lot of interesting ma...

There is this old one. It's ancient, but you might recognise one of the posters:

Re: Straw Art

More seriously, and since it's out of the original thread now, I thought there was an element of ganging up there (from "several of us") that seemed designed in part to make one poster feel unwelcome, which is going further than necessary. That's the only reason I commented, since I wasn't otherwise...

What happened to the part where B & D (with some support from E & F), in frustration at not being able to debate A's assertion without having to fall back on an equally monolithic form of extreme individualism that doesn't so much debate the issue of values as conveniently avoid it, and after insist...

Maceo Parker & All the King's Men, Funky Music Machine (1975).

Awful, a long way to fall from his previous two records, which were great.

This one (from the Wikipedia list) is funny as well.

Re: broetzmann

(On the subject, can anyone tell me why Metal bands started pütting ümlauts ëverywhere?) There's a useful entry on metal umlauts on Wikipedia, at least for compiling a list of bands. Presumably, in a mixed up way, it was to evoke "the Wagnerian aspect of Metal" (Richard Meltzler, referring to his s...

Re: Stones covers ?

Ananda Shankar's version of "Jumpin' Jack Flash" on his first record on Reprise (1970) is really good. His idea was to fuse Indian sitar with Western pop and rock backings (and some moogs and things--"the most modern electronic devices"), and it's played with enough conviction to pull it off.

Yes, I know. But the person was looking for recommendations as well, which could be included along the way.

Re: EAI on Vinyl

Maybe the second half of this thread should be split (if there's enough interest to continue it as a topic in its own right), as it's now become more generally about audio. Hopefully the discussion can drift back in the direction of the orignal request, if there is anything more to add.

How exceptionally provocative, my bones are trembling :o There is some context to this picture: it's an exact recreation of the ad and full-page photo of Saori Hara that appeared in the inside cover of the Wire (in a previous issue, 310) and that caused some controversy in the letters page. The Great 1955 Shrine Concert recorded in Los Angeles with a huge and rapturous audience by Specialty is another unmissable one. Electric performances by the Pilgrim Travelers, the Caravans with James Cleveland, Brother Joe May, the Soul Stirrers with Sam Cooke (the "Nearer to Thee" is a knockout),...
