Re: Rap Music
All of a sudden I'm interested in Top 40 Hiphop again. It's been 7-8 years since. From about 2007-2011 I'd turn on the stations and it would be an "Autotune Ballad". Autotune is fine with me, but there was a trend for a few years where all the male vocalists were made to sound like an even wimpier v...

Re: DJ Screw
I've got a few hundred Chopped & Screwed albums probably. My personal favorite of the genre always comes back to one track that's actually mixed by Michael Watts. It roams around filesharing as "Kappa Classic". I've got it on a couple of compilations under other names. It's about 8 minutes long and ...

Re: Disco
Anybody who goes dancing or DJs out knows this intuitively I think, but it bears mentioning: some things that are dull/trite for listening are *fantastic* for dancing -- and vice-versa. (Not directed at anything particular in this thread, just a general principle I've noticed.) Then there's the ques...

Re: Why Do You Listen To Noise? (I'm writing an opinion arti
To me any experience is a new "text" to read: a song, making love, seeing the pickup truck full of guys on their way to mow lawns drive by while walking to the convenient store, a good meal, whatever. But it's always my own mind/spirit/consciousness/whatever that's beholding it and filtering it and ...

Re: ANTI-SELF: EXPERIENCE-LESS NOISE
Occasionally I "pay a visit" to the world of "Noise". I don't spend most of my "music time" thinking about it, performing it, or listening to it, but I have a lot of familiarity with its forms and customs for a "lay person". Certain components of its mindset, and their potential to transform ideas a...

Re: Most Accessible Onkyo/EAI Music...
I think everybody has their own ideas about exactly what "accessibility" is. My plan is to cull through every single suggestion made and then, if you will, apply my own definition of "accessible" to it.

Re: Most Accessible Onkyo/EAI Music...
Jon Abbey: understood. I could be wrong but I think traditional "pop songs" are what this person is used to, if the music that they themselves create is any indicator. But I know what you mean about people surprising you.
mudd: No prob. We'll definitely catch up sooner or later.

Re: Most Accessible Onkyo/EAI Music...
Yes, a track off TBTB would be a good one too. Then maybe a track from "Cloud" by 4G to round out the pack. And a vintage cut from Pauline Oliveros or maybe from the Sextant album by Herbie Hancock.
I will check out the Taku Unami also.
Thanks again.

Re: Most Accessible Onkyo/EAI Music...
Fennesz might be a good idea. I was trying to help this person see that this music stands distinct from stuff he might have heard on Pitchfork, but a touch of that might be good. Thanks. Jon Abbey: sorry if this is a dumb question but is the idea behind "ErstPop" releases that they are more accessib...

Most Accessible Onkyo/EAI Music...
Hi, I'm trying to put together a small mix for someone who is mostly into "Indie Rock" but who has interest in learning more about what I'll broadly call "Onkyo/EAI" music. I was trying to stick with things that are relatively "pure breed" (I want to stay away from Black Dice, Animal Collective, etc...

Re: Pictures of your setup
I use the exact same setup for "regular" DJing and for "improv" music. Not pictured: Technics turntables, which go on either side of this box. https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-X_nDsYOt8tw/TnBXreGmVPI/AAAAAAAAASg/QwBIUKkjCOQ/s720/IMG_0299.jpg I also replaced a Pioneer EFX-1000 with this circuit-ben...

Re: Music from China and Vietnam
I wandered into a Pho restaurant in another city a few minutes before it opened, and a man who was presumably the owner was inside cleaning up. He was listening to what sounded like a Vietnamese version of an American male "crooner". The recording sounded like a late 60's or maybe early 70's product...

Re: Disco
Thanks for that Larry Levan mix Jon Abbey. Basically everything Larry Levan played was excellent, and his edits are usually better than the originals. He was a genius, and I don't like to use that word. I play out a fair amount. Here are some of my favored American disco tracks (as opposed to Italo ...

Re: question about reel-to-reel tape machines
Hi, If you're still looking for help on this, yes you can use the 7.5" reels on that machine. You generally use NAB adapters on the "big" reels and the "small" reels generally fit right on the spindle without the adapter. In fact, it's probably easier to use the 7.5 than the 10.5 because the NAB ada...

Re: Why aren't there more women involved in this music ?
Hey flauminator -- yeah I paged back and saw it *blush* *** Aaaaaanyway, whether it's biology, politics, society -- or some combination of them in varying degrees (which is what I think), the net effect is that this kind of music is generally a "boy's club" whether people want to admit it or not. If...

Re: Why aren't there more women involved in this music ?
Joda: Do you think the reams and reams of academic empirical data suggesting things along these lines is a conspiracy, or a fabrication, then? Am I hallucinating when I repeatedly see rooms 90+% full of educated white dudes at these shows? How about the statistically-confirmed male majority at video...

Re: Why aren't there more women involved in this music ?
I've been in some scenes where 30-40% of the players were women but that's indeed exceptional. No girlfriend I've ever had has ever really been into the stuff -- but God bless them, they all tried. My wife-to-be (tomorrow!) is a singer/songwriter on the rich people bar scene and she says what, I thi...
