Re: MLB Hot Stove 2011-12

I just got word of this site via a KLaw tweet. This is tremendous. I'm not finished reading it, not even close, but this really puts a huge dent in the idea that PEDs improve player performance in baseball. Shades of Brian O. http://steroids-and-baseball.com/ Hey, did *I* write that? Thanks, Lar, q...

Re: Wire Magazine Records of the Year 2011 (Spoilers)

I'm sure other regular contributors to this board (Jon) and beyond (Brian, Richard) will admit to similar narrowing of preference fields with the passing time .. though I suspect mine are still a bit wider than theirs. Very much the case, in largely similar areas. However, it's more than compensate...

Re: Boxing

I'm guessing I was the only person in attendance reading Diamond's "Collapse" on Kindle between fights... Well, the main bout wasn't terribly exciting but it's one of those things that happens sometimes: an outclassed opponent who does one thing very well (defense) goes with that the whole time. Don...

Re: Boxing

Will be attending my first boxing match ever tonight, to see Nonito Donaire, a virtual in-law, at MSG. Figure I might as well watch all the prelims. Not sure how much I'm looking forward to it, but we'll see. I *am* bringing my Kindle in case it's totally tedious.

Re: MLB Postseason 2011

Can we please nip this "shutdown inning" thing in the bud? "Tigers just scored a run--Verlander needs a shutdown inning here." If so, deosn't it follow that the Yankees "need" to not let that happen and reduce the whole ball of crap to nonsense? Today, one of these idiots says, "You want [as a pitch...

(Big article on John Sterling in today's NYT. He comes off as every bit the moronic buffoon we know him to be.)

Re: MLB Hot Stove 2011-12

[quote="Brian Olewnick" my observational perspective is that maybe (some) steroids help/ed eyesight or focus or something along those lines, it seemed like hitters consistently saw the ball better (of course pitchers used them too). Could have\, though is that an effect of Steroids, dunno. It *was*...

Re: MLB Hot Stove 2011-12

Not sure this is good logic. After all, even if a few more HRs turn into long HRs, a helluva lot more warning track shots turned into short HRs. So the rise in HRs overall is a clear and unambiguous indication of more long hits. Not sure why this would be the case. The original argument was that PE...

Re: MLB Hot Stove 2011-12

Craw, right, my view exactly. Nags, you mushy soul, I haven't looked at the stats in any depth (and won't), just wondering if the extremes of recent pitching success (the no-hitters and such) aren't a combo of randomness and having great pitchers like Verlander around. But at least part of the *gene...

Re: MLB Hot Stove 2011-12

Hello Brian! Sorry to reengage like this but, holy straw man. You think Brady Anderson and Mark McGwire and David Ortiz happened because of ballparks? Hey, schau! Anderson was the Davey Johnson of his time. No one, to the best of my knowledge, accused Johnson of taking PEDs. It just happens sometim...

Re: Boxing

Speaking of which, I miss Brian. One of the most fun and smart dudes we had on the old JC. I used to like to try and pick arguments with him just because he was so damn thorough. But it was tough to find good debates because I mostly agreed with him. I kind of forced it just to have something to do...

Happened to see Tomomo Adachi (who has worked with Ami, I believe) at Roulette last night, performing sound poetry/electronics including Hugo Ball's "Gadji Beri Bimba" and four works by concrete poet Seiichi Niikuni. Write-up to come this evening at the ol' blog. Very good at it's best which, for me...

fwiw, I think the ESPN tribute to Rotisserie baseball is on tonight at 8PM. It includes a reenactment of the initial group. Okrent and Waggoner say it's actually funny.
