Re: grants (primarily in the US)
It might also be helpful to state that in my past experience, it was always (financially) better to pursue my own artistic desires through an arts organization. Working with an organization will also open you up to more possibilities. There are a *lot* more hoops for a funding organization if it gi...

Re: Why aren't there more women involved in this music ?
I found a parallel argument at Autodesk forum, a discussion on the under representation of women in Civil Engineering. Interestingly, most of the responses there were from women, but then there's this: "Civil Engineering favors those who have better spacial reasoning and math skills. Biologically, ...

Re: Why aren't there more women involved in this music ?
there simply isn't a succinct answer to the question, its complicated and messy, indeed, because there are numerous answers, that may or may not be applicable in a given scene or with certain people. does sexism exist in the medium? yes. is there anything that can be done about it? no. Well, no one...

Re: Why aren't there more women involved in this music ?
it always depends on how widely one is defining "this music" Yeah, I was biting my tongue, or rather stepping on my hands, but if you open the discussion to proper/contemporary noise, there's no end to the women in audiences, I've noticed, and the percentage involved in creation is similarly amplif...

http://hcl.harvard.edu/hfa/images/films/2006spring/privilege.jpg Privilege - Peter Watkins (1967) - a bit dry considering when it was made, but pretty awesome. There are some absurd wtf moments. Promotional text for the DVD talks about it being prescient. It does strike me as being very British, th...

Re: Experimental film and video art
We should also mention Bruce Conner, who just passed and really had some great films. Agreed! The "music video" (in quotes, because I think it was done on film, not video) he did for Devo's "Mongoloid" is classic, as well as the film set to the Bob Dylan song with the chorus "Everybody must get sto...

Re: Experimental film and video art
I saw the McCall flim at SFMOMA, I really enjoyed it, but it took a few times seeing it. They had a nice Piplotti Rist exhibition as well, that had special projection things going on, Multiple screens, projecting on to objects and one was even embedded in the floor. I was only so enamored of the Mc...

Sympathy for the Devil is another good one - the title song will be stuck in your head for days ... well, it was stuck in mine, anyways. Well, it was a rather well-known little ditty by a rather well-known band.. Not such a big fan of the movie though - and certainly not a patch on Week End , imo. ...

Re: Jean-Luc Godard
I watched "Breathless" and "Alphaville" recently and enjoyed them. Sympathy for the Devil is another good one - not as epic as Weekend, though with some of the same themes and devices - black power, waifish female literary figure in the forest - though the title song will be stuck in your head for ...
