possibly the strongest start to an otherwise forgettable novel in the history of literature.aka rereading the first 60 pages (and prob some of the Manx Martins sections) of Underworld.

Very helpful. Thanks, Simon, and to Richard who also notified me. I've been able to work out alternate transportation from the airport and look forward to seeing you there.

I'll tell you how close I was the other day to "fuck it" and dropping Hamiltons on the Criterion set at Border's. And then I checked myself. AB will have to wait.

pour, pour! but you know that already. The blooper you mentioned, and others like it, indeed seem deliberate. One of the things I love about this film is how haphazardly it departs from an agenda -- and still manages to be incredibly entertaining. The verfremd...huh? scratchy stuff keeps with Rodrig...

Re: High school exploitation movies
Massacre at Central High! Haven't thought of that flick in years. I wonder if they have it on Netflix. Saw it on cable in the early 80's and will never forget the van scene, a murder tactic that's never been used in a movie before or since, that I know of. Along with the aforementioned Malibu High, ...

Stephen, I've done a little math following some reading of old faithful. Try shunting an 8-10 ohm resistor across the high side and compare with your signal using the preamp alone.

I'm sorry but phở is far more inspiring than soba, and might have made a far better record. Toshi's loss.

Damn, Flaum! You back home already, too? Nicely detailed review there. I dug WB a bit more from what you've described here, but yes, positioning had to be key in fully appreciating her stereophonic setup. I'm just a sucker for someone who can smack around one of those digitech or boss pedals into co...

She has good taste. That last set was aces. Been thinking about the Weyes Bluhd number(s) today, too. Good times, and a pleasure to finally stick faces on some of the names around town.

Re: p.i.l reissues?
Johnny Lydon became an interesting musician when he formed PIL. And Jah Wobble was at one point the ultimate hidden underground cinderella musician. I loved PIL growing up and was so relieved when bands like them, Killing Joke, Wire, The Wipers, The Birthday Party, early Siouxsie, Joy Division, et a...

Re: what are you listening to? a second wave
Italia is Taku Unami's [sic] only record in that particular style, a transitional record between the broken chords and arpeggios of Opposite and his actual minimalism. It remains my favourite of his 'pre-malfattian' era, and a reference for most. I agree with this statement, and was quite fond of t...

Re: Recently Watched Films
It all depends on whether you'd rather watch Bowie semi-convincingly hack his way through a spaceman performance with fairly adequate human nature oddities falling into place or see mundane Garfunkel bore you to tears with a script and character beyond his ability to render. The latter just struck m...

Vienna ca. 1980? That movie is suckville, regardless of any peripherals.jon abbey wrote:dunno about that, I think Bad Timing captures a sense of Vienna very nicely and even Garfunkel is OK in his fish out of water role.

Re: Recently Watched Films
Hadn't seen this one since school daze and it hasn't aged well (or I haven't). The 139' Director's Cut is essential (the cut version is even more opaque), but the pace drags and the acting disappoints. Not so much Bowie, who only has to be weird / quintessentially English, but Candy Clark, who pres...
