Books about the technical side of sound/engineering/etc.

Hi all. I'm starting to get more and more attracted to the idea of having the stuff I need to create and record music in my office/rehearsal space, and for that I need to read and take notes and think. Is there any like standard litterature discussing the physics of sound in relation to engineering,...

Re: Edition RZ

The version of Piano (Three Hands) played by Feldman himself and John Tilbury on the disc with archival Feldman recordings are wonderful. Also very nice to hear Feldman play Extensions 3, a really nice early piano piece, where he really slams those very few FFs. Almost brutal.

Re: Really Fast and Short Screaming Hardcore Songs

I dig the track Group Sex by The Circle Jerks, but it is probably closer to a minute than the regular grindcore length of 15 seconds.

Re: Amplified Gesture

I think that this sounds very promising, actually. I think that a very healthy way of approaching eai for Sylvian is to use his own musical language instead of trying to sound like Ami Yoshida. It seems that a lot of people has trouble with the way the vocals are layered on top of the improvised mus...

Re: Controlling parameters in realtime with Bidule

I would reccomend checking out PD and/or Supercollider . PD is like max/msp, only free and with different objects, but made by Miller Puckette, who also made max. The sine wave pitch follower thing would be easy to do there, I think. And speaking of the sinewave-thing you were asking about, there is...

Re: noteworthy quotations

what is it that you think they are doing these activities for ? to be able to (...) look at something and understand it I'm not trying to argue here, and I'm certainly not trying to sound like a conservatory-trained jazz drummer, but I think that the notion of practice as something strictly muscula...

Re: noteworthy quotations

Great interview, Lukaz! I'm not quite sure what this quote means, though? Is Keith's goal to be a good artist, or just an artist? you can be a great guitar player and a terrible musician. you can be a great guitar player and a great musician and a terrible artist. and the goal for me is to be an art...

Re: reasons for releasing

for example, i have quite the pile of wolf eyes cdrs. most of them aren't very good, but i like what they do (or were doing then, if i'm gonna be accurate) enough that i am interested in hearing more of it even without the amount of care and editing they might apply to a cd-r release. i wouldn't re...

Re: Wedding Ceremony - New on Cathnor

More Keith and non-listening: Clearly the death of John's mother just a few days before the recording had a deep effect on how I perceived the "room". By room, I'm not merely referring to the space we performed in, but an altogether larger imaginary conceptual space, which included supporting John t...

Re: places/venues to play in Europe

Yeah, finding places to play with pianos is really hard here in Norway unless you have a big enough name to get decent gigs from state-subsidized venues, where they often have pianos. Here in Trondheim we have Dokkhuset which is subsidized and not really into improv, more jazz or chamber music stuff...

Re: spoken word

I think Patti Smith and Kevin Shield's two recordings of her book The Coral Sea are pretty great. They were released last year, if I remember correctly. Shields lays down a soft shimmering tonal accompaniment while Patti Smith recites her book about the death of Robert Mapplethorpe. I haven't read t...

Re: the voice in improvised music

I haven't heard any of the discs under discussion, but to me the interesting question of the repetitive use of that sample is wether she does anything to it? Or is it just exactly the same thing placed in different contexts? I mean, when Tilbury plays his instantly recognizable arpeggios, or when Ke...

Re: the voice in improvised music

But there is something about the choice of sounds being made by most vocal improvisors as well. They tend to be really abrasive. There's no singers that I'm aware of that are like Opposite-era Sugimoto or Tilbury. I would love to hear someone hum in a thoughtful way in an improvised music setting as...

Aha, I found that disc, but for some reason I thought that he played electronics on that recording and not piano. Turns out it's somewhere in between.

Thanks for your help, and the quote is now fixed.

With the risk of being a self-promoting dick I'll enclose this youtube link of Ole-Henrik Moe, Kari Rønnekleiv, Lars Myrvoll and me playing some sort of post-VU instrumental rock, but with more of an hare krishna vibe to it (hopefully) at an exhibition opening.

Roger McGuinn with The Byrds. Of course Eight Miles High, but more specifically for me his Bach quotation on She Don't Care About Time. Great stuff!

Or even better, Sean Meehan who uses only a snare drum with stuff on top of it.
