Re: Colour Out Of Space - festival 2009

Hey, just wanted to say thanks for the tips. My friend ended up booking us into St Christopher's Palace but I'll bear these in mind for future. Cheers!

Re: Favourite pictures of musicians

Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band, from the Trout Mask sleeve. There are so many amazing pictures of Beefheart and his various groups, and I suppose I would have preferred to pick an obscure one, but I feel like I would love this photo even if I had no idea who they were... EDIT: wow, I honestly ...

Re: Colour Out Of Space - festival 2009

Just got a weekend pass for this and was wondering if anyone had any advice to offer on where to stay over the weekend? There are two of us going down and we don't know Brighton well at all. Having said that, we'd prefer somewhere cheap even if the location is less than ideal. Really looking forward...

Re: inglorious basterds

Ok, sorry it's taken me several days to reply, but I'll try to quickly go over the plot elements that bothered me: There are two storylines (Basterds, Shosanna) which one assumes* will link or overlap in some way, and when we learn of Operation Kino we know the Basterds will end up in Shosanna's cin...

Re: Bach

It's interesting that you have a preference for the secular solo music of someone whose greatest achievement was as a polyphonist and for whom devout Protestantism was at the root of all his art. This does seem a bit odd when you put it like that, but I think I'm in the same boat as the OP seems to...

Re: football chants

I laughed pretty hard when I read this topic. Serious kudos to anyone who can tell us where the tune to "You're so shit it's unbelievable" is from originally! EDIT: Ok, I'll attempt a serious answer. I can't remember if the original pop single was based on the terrace chant or if it was the other wa...

Re: Perverted Pop Songs

Possibly too obvious, but the Who's 'Pictures Of Lilly' certainly gave me a jolt when I first heard it aged 14. EDIT: Just realised what an unfortunate choice of words that was  Anyway, does anybody remember what Townshend tried to claim this song was actually about (with no more success than ...

Re: inglorious basterds

I had low expectations for this (mainly because I really hated Kill Bill vol 1, so much that I refused to watch vol 2) and only caught it at a cinema because... well, I work in one and we've been showing it two or three times a night for the last 2 weeks. I actually really enjoyed it, one of the mos...

Re: I hate ordering exotic musical instruments online.

I contacted Adaptatrap today and spoke to Les. He told me that they generally get their Indian stringed instruments from the following two retailers based in Southall: Bina Musicals - http://www.binaswar.com/Locations.htm Jas Musicals - http://www.jas-musicals.com/sectrad/jasmusicshowroom.asp I figu...

Re: I hate ordering exotic musical instruments online.

http://www.adaptatrap.co.uk Thanks for this! Even if they can't help with the sarangi, I can see myself spending a good bit of money with those guys. tuning a sarangi is supposed to be a bitch. all those sympathetic strings... That's one of the main reasons I'm interested in it. Not sure about a Ro...

I hate ordering exotic musical instruments online.

I've been wanting to ask about this here for a while, but was hoping to do a bit more research of my own first - this has been hampered by my lousy internet connection at home. So here goes (tried to search for similar topics, in vain...) Recently I've decided I need to own a sarangi, such as this o...

Re: INSTAL 09 line up so far

I cannot recall his name off the top of my head, but the guy back in 2005 (i think) that basically did what The Wire quite funnily called a 'drum lab'. It was terrible, just some guy rattling out tedious drum fills for 45 mins. Yet the audience was going nuts. FWIW this was Tom Bruno from the NY fr...

Re: Drinking 2009

Continuing the Sierra Nevada love, I found their Weizenbock on tap in town recently. I was told only 8 barrels of the stuff had made it to the UK, so I made sure to return as often as I could afford to until it ran out. I've never tried the regular wheat beer they do, so couldn't compare the two, bu...

Re: Music by children

Most of my other choices have already been mentioned up-thread but there's also a couple of Campbell Kneale albums that i've read about that apparently feature his children playing instruments. One of my favourite Birchville Cat Motel albums is Creeping Frost Onset, which I think features the whole...

have you traced trad gras och stenar back through international harvester, harvester, and parson sound? i'm definitely in the camp of older is better. also maybe look into nnck or sunburned in the 2003-2004 window. heavily influenced by that same sound. In this vein: Vibracathedral Orchestra. I'd l...

curious what people have to say about this stuff: http://www.geocities.com/fbessem/frames/compilation_africanpearls.html haven't heard them mostly due to price, but they look enticing, and i've heard a lot of good talk about the congolese rumba rock one. I was just going to mention these, the ones ...

Re: Turntable music

Didn't see any mention of Institut Fuer Feinmotorik in this thread. Their sound leans maybe a bit too heavily towards familiar clicks'n'cuts electronica, but from about '97 onwards it's all done with prepared turntables (up to ten at once) and no records, so I thought it might be of interest to the ...

Re: Eliane Radigue

Hi, long time listener first time caller. By strange coincidence I've been exploring Radigue's work for the first time this past week or so. Some really amazing discoveries so far, especially Trilogie de la Morte and L’île re-sonante. I've heard Songs Of Milarepa too and can't say I liked it so much...
