Re: for someone new to the forum / improv

There are some good threads here, the "Otomo, Sachiko M, Axel Dorner and related musics" (something like that) from around 2005 is worth reading, as is the more recent discussion of a Mattin / Keith Rowe performance. I'm sure that there are quite a few other threads worth mentioning, I'd also sugges...

Re: Indonesian Music

I don't know a lot about it, but there's a syncretic style called Dangdut that's pretty popular in Indonesia. A quick search for it on youtube should turn up a host of videos.

Re: Currently Reading

I liked Cloud Atlas, but would need to re-read it to get a better sense of the message-code distinctions in the structure and the narrative. I read Ghostwritten right after Cloud Atlas, and it really made it clear to me that I hadn't picked up on a lot of what was going on in the former book.

Pech has been an enduring favorite of mine, and Oscillation Vacillation is a newer favorite. Great stuff. I've most recently had an encouraging first listen to the Karel / Krebs "Falter 1-5" on Cathnor, and am going to dive back into it this afternoon, lots of subtle and interesting stuff at work in...

Re: great SF books

I wasn't too moved by Matter, Banks' recent novel, it felt a little flat, but I'm happy to see that he's diving into the Culture again in Surface Detail. Reynold's Revelation Space was not a bad traditional science fiction series, I liked the basic conceit, that faster-than-light travel is impossibl...

Inspired by this thread, I just listened to Part I from "In Case of Fire, Take the Stairs", a trio with Kaffe Matthews and Sachiko M, as well as select tracks from "LAlienation", her more recent duo with Sabine Ercklentz. She really has impressive range, and is excellent at both setting ground condi...

Re: great SF books

I'm re-reading Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars trilogy at the moment, and am enjoying it, though parts of it feel a bit too much like book reports (on sociobiology, the fact-value distinction, industrial-era mysticism), but the combination of massive scale and attention to detail is quite interesting. H...

Re: Criticism & Sound Art / Experimental Music

Dumb as David Keenan's recent writing on guitar-centered improvisation was, the form of writing at which he failed is more worthwhile than the way most contemporary sound art / experimental music is described in print. I'd rather see someone put a few thousand well thought out words about a clutch o...

Re: what's the most critically acclaimed band...

The Ed Sullivan show was hardly the only channel for hearing music in the postwar era, and the barriers to inclusion on the show helped structure a diverse and reflexive music market. Most cities in the 1950's had jazz clubs, which featured music that certainly wasn't going to be on tv. The differen...

Re: what's the most critically acclaimed band...

I put Sonic Youth in the "might not like so much had I not heard them as a teenager" pretty much for the reasons listed in the last page or so. They definitely sounded more radical to me when I was 15 then they do now, and I mostly like their records from the last decade for the nicely crafted pop s...

Re: what's the most critically acclaimed band...

This is a good question, and it's making me think more critically about what I do like. The below list ranges from things I really tried to get into, like Sun Ra, to things that friends liked but I didn't (The Fall), to things that I might like if I heard more of (Fela Kuti). I feel lazy listing ent...

Would you include Deleuze and Guattari's discussions of Boulez in Thousand Plateaus in that assessment? I sort of like how they go from woolen Mongol tents to Serialism, it's like a high-concept round of the game Telephone.

Re: Point of Departure / Sealed Knot roundtable discussion

There might be some ways of thinking about music that are more useful for musicians than fans, and vice versa. In the roundtable, the musicians talked about the particular groups they've been involved with, and the conversations they've had about the specific trajectories of those groups. By contras...
