Re: Headphone recommendations?
Shortly after I got my Sennheiser HD 595's (semi-open), I put in some Jeph Jerman and it was like someone was walking through leaves behind me. Extremely clear. The bass is good, but my basis for comparison is limited. One thing I really like about them in particular is that they are extremely comfo...

Thanks ppl. Am looking through these.
Re Deupree, Stil. remains my fave. I agree that his new stuff feels really flabby compared to his older more lean and spare work.

Re: sparse, synthy rec's
I am quite unaware of all of this. Have been pretty well out of the loop. Of the newer stuff you mention, I am enjoying Stellar OM Source quite a bit, but these are much more pretty-ambient and/or techno-y than what I had in mind. Traditional harmony or a clear meter/beat are going to be a hard sell...

Re: Generative Music and music utilizing Max MSP, etc
Kenneth Kirschner flirted with "generative" music briefly, though I find the results disappointing (I quite like his non-generative stuff). He basically generated a set of sounds that he thought would string together well, then had them randomly lined up or overlayed with variable amounts of silence...

Re: how does toshimaru nakamura do it
I'm a broken record with how much I plug equalizers in feedback, but eq is a sure-fire way to tune your feedback. A feedback loop with nothing but a graphic eq is a very easy way to get a cleanish tone, and it's very easy to change the pitch (parametric is even better for this but more $$ - a tone k...

Re: Getting into No Input with No Money
I have gotten a lot of mileage out of a stereo 15-band graphic equalizer (rack unit) that i purchased for around $40 on ebay. 15 bands of eq is a lot of control over what sounds you get. I find that rack unit effects, especially old stuff, can give you a much larger bang/buck as compared with pedals...

sparse, synthy rec's
I've been getting into Kenneth Kirschner's earlier work; focus on sine tones, a few other electronic-y sounds, a fair amount of silence in between moments. (His more recent stuff is also great, but deals primary with acoustic instruments.) I was wondering if people had recommendations for similar mu...

forgot. I think the rant sounds better in the present tense tho. It sounds bad and unnecessary in any tense really. I'm sure that for every example of "transparent bullshit" you could find in Stockhausen's writings I could find you an example of the same kind of insight and fascination that makes m...

Re: Demolish Serious Culture
Stockhausen's writings are transparent bullshit. Powerful ideas infuse his music, but his attempts to communicate those ideas makes it seem like he doesn't understand them at all. Or else he's conning us. Either way he's an asshole. (I suppose an argument could be for why such a con could be conside...

Re: no input mixer question
a bit late to reply to the OP, I would be surprised if your mixer feedback burned anything but the mixer itself. Mixers are full of components that saturate/clip, and clipping is just as good a limiter for keeping the power of your signal limited. If you're worried about burning the PA, you could us...

some fire music for my ihm friends: http://soundcloud.com/viridianturkey/a-feeler-grew-omen-gory Lots of fun. This kind of thing is a bit outside my wheelhouse, so my vocab is a bit limited, but there's some good variation in texture, volume, and density. Frenetic without feeling harried or anxious...

Re: I Hate Demos / Today's Improv/Composition
I realized Michael Pisaro's "An Unrhymed Chord" with 150 sinewaves. http://www.physics.rutgers.edu/~glocke/sound/unrhymed_150_sines.mp3 ( high-quality LAME VBR encoding 65 Mb) I used this score as a frame for a dense mass of sinewaves, 150 tones per section. (Pitches were selected from a log-normal ...

Jon Mueller put together this compilation of Georgian (north of Turkey, not Florida) traditional men's choral music for a Type Records podcast: http://typerecords.com/typecasts/25

royalty free, high quality voice samples
I'm looking for clean recordings of people talking. It doesn't matter what they're saying, I just want low-noise, high quality, freely available samples.
Any suggestions?

the structure/form distinction was the only thing that I found really opaque, so my thanks go to patois, Wombatz, Dan, for your insights.

http://www.stevesmusiccenter.com/BossGEB-7Big.jpg How is this? And what in particular will you use it for (if you don't mind me asking)? I'm looking for something similar for shaping noise and feedback tones; I was tempted by the MXR M108 but it's a little expensive, so I was considering something ...

Re: eh... jungle/drum'n'bass?
jazzy dnb recs: rpinell mentioned roni size represent's first album new forms, which i second. as he says, their later stuff is crap. probably not what you'd consider jazzy, but for dnb fans, LTJ Bukem/Logical Progression (the first one) is a classic. Planet V is somewhat similar. In a similar vein,...
