Re: Great free jazz/improvised albums 2005-2015

apologies for the slight thread diversion, but I wanted to post this somewhere here and this seemed like as good a place as any. I guess it's a few years old but I hadn't seen it before, I have not laughed so hard in a long time. https://www.captiongenerator.com/98859/Booking-A-European-Tour?fbclid...

Re: Great free jazz/improvised albums 2005-2015

Alright, thanks a lot for all the recommendations everyone (Steve, you've given me a lot to explore in particular). I need to hear that Brotzmann with Tchicai stuff. Interesting pairing I didn't know about previously. Re: Relative Pitch They seem like a very promising label for this stuff. I've only...

Re: Great free jazz/improvised albums 2005-2015

some of the old guard continuing to work on a very high level, like leo smith, joe mcphee, or henry threadgill. two releases that transcended my taking these guys for granted were tapestries for small orchestra by bill dixon and the first peter brötzmann/heather leigh (though that's probably 2016) ...

Re: Great free jazz/improvised albums 2005-2015

Thanks for the recommendations so far. Familiar with the Brotzmann/Leigh disc. One of the few things I've been interested by the Brotz in a long while. It also seems one where he's more out of his usual routine, but then again, I haven't been paying that much attention as I wrote before. Wow, the li...

Great free jazz/improvised albums 2005-2015

so the dates may seem arbitrary, but 2005 is the time I mostly stopped paying attention to the general area of free jazz and improv, and I figure you can't know if an album really holds up until after a few years thus 2005-2015... but of course view this as a loose limitation and act accordingly. I ...

Re: List your Top 5 favorite Erstwhile discs

It's hard to parse out just how much of this list is nostalgia, but here were are anyway. - Do - EL005 - Duos for Doris - Tears - Contact/Soba to Bara I will say that I was able (and more willing) to have complete immersive experiences with these albums when they came out than others in the last 5 y...

Re: Feldman and Scelsi

Feldman once, when asked about Arvo P?rt said, "I would like to pull that guy's beard.". Is there some specific book that collects them, or at least most of them? That quote is particularly funny, and I think I would more readily read that than listening to one of his string quartets nowadays.. Ser...

Re: Tetuzi Akiyama/Bryan Eubanks /Jason Kahn/Toshimaru Nakam

I saw them in Minneapolis. I thought there were moments that were really nice (and loud). But overall it meandered too much for me. Akiyama had a really beautiful interlude at one point, with that fractured/time delayed guitar of his (I wish that had had more time to breathe), and Eubanks was fun to...

Re: AMM Thread (renamed)

yeah, it just seems like a really odd area for nostalgia from my perspective. for instance, Keith and Evan Parker played a night of duos on the last night of 1999 (released as Dark Rags on Potlatch), and it barely made sense at the time. when promoters asked them to do more duo sets in subsequent y...

Re: The IHM metal thread pt. 2

I haven't heard any of those yet, but I've heard good things about all of them (except the last one , which I'll have to check out too). I was surprised that Cruicamentum got back together, but I'm glad they did. They seem like a good fit for Profound Lore. I LOVE That Scorched cover painting. So ba...

Re: AMM Thread (renamed)

I'd say failure is integral to most or all free improv, while it's left to the musicians to verbally make a philosophy out of it or not. Anyway... Yeah, I agree. I've always felt that way, even when trying to explain free jazz to my friends who didn't even like jazz, much less free music of any kin...

Re: AMM Thread (renamed)

Dredging this one up again. I think I heard my first AMM album about 15 years ago. It was From a Strange Place on PSF (one of the few not on Matchless, along with the weird one on ECM, and probably another I'm too lazy to look up). Anyway, I immediately became fascinated with it. I'd play it often. ...

Re: Bring the (harsh) noise !

I have to second or third Puce Mary recommendation. Really great stuff. I'm unhappy I missed her on her US tour. I really enjoyed The Rita/Climax Denial tape that came out this last year. The Rita is ridiculously on point and consistent. I also just got the Reverse Baptism record that came out a cou...

Re: Now Playing

I think Swans are an amazing live band, and have produced ok to great records. For some reason, I haven't really gotten into To Be Kind. But I haven't given it much time. M. Gira is a fascinating dude, with awesome hair.

Re: The IHM metal thread pt. 2

The new Godflesh is available for streaming, and it's utterly crushing. Ugly (in the good sense) riffs and hooks aplenty. Perhaps their best after Streetcleaner. Good news! I've been listening to this a bit lately. Really good stuff. I'm impressed. And it's definitely a welcome return. Other stuff:...

Re: The IHM metal thread pt. 2

NP: King Diamond- Abigail This is the one in which Diamond's falsetto makes sense for me, and the riffs and arrangements are stellar. I wonder how would have Emperor turned out to be without the massive influence of Mercyful Fate and King Diamond. Awesome album. Agreed. Their influence is everywhere.
