Re: Film Studies Book Recs
Wow, there's so many, but looking at my shelves and choosing a totally unrepresentative favourite top ten (+1) of mine I came up with: Robert Bresson - Notes on the Cinematographer Gilles Deleuze - Cinema 1 & 2 Early Cinema: Space Frame Narrative (ed. Thomas Elsaesser) Movie Mutations (ed. Jonathan ...

Re: Demolish Serious Culture
When I first read Formalized Music about 12 or 13 years ago I remember finding it tremendously exciting (though I did struggle with parts of it - in fact, the experience had a lot in common with most of my encounters with maths: I get it, and then suddenly I don't... seems much harder to have an 'in...

Re: Michael Haneke
This is very interesting: much that Dan says in his most recent post is how I feel about Lars von Trier - particularly Dancer in the Dark and Dogville. But I don't feel the same way about Haneke - partly because I think von Trier parades the artificiality (ludicrousness, even) of his scenarios to em...

Yes, huge thanks to Dan and all the others involved for what was - and continues to be - a very important resource for me. Being reviewed in PT for the first time was an extremely exciting moment!

Re: Help out an initiate?
A couple of things right off the top of my head - I'm sure others will have more suggestions - but one club worth looking at is the totally charming Boat-ting ( http://www.boat-ting.co.uk/ ). Richard Pinnell mentions various gigs on his blog ( http://www.thewatchfulear.com/ ), and a more recent inno...

Re: Morton Feldman
Funny cause I thought it passed really quickly... at times during it it felt very long but when it was over it just felt like I'd heard a piece of music, not that I'd been there since the dawn of time. (My girlfriend had a bit of a break after what she thought was about 45 minutes - not having looke...

Thanks Dan! It went really well I thought... many thanks to those who came and to the earlier gigs as well.
Funny, Nottingham is the place I always seem to get lost, though it did take Patrick Farmer and I about two hours to leave Newcastle once...

Re: John Butcher/Dominic Lash/John Russell UK tour 2010
Just bumping this as our gig tonight in Reading is the trio's last until June. The Rising Sun is a fantastic venue but the jazz & improv programme is under threat due to low audiences. So it would be great if anyone within reach of Reading would think of coming out and supporting creative music - le...

Re: Furt
I think Defekt is a bad record, except for the last track. Could you say why? Clearly the last track is a classic example of the dense, micro-hocketting Furt that probably springs to most people's minds when the group is mentioned. But that is precisely why I like the other tracks so much... I thin...

Re: Furt
Yes, great band. The fORCH and plus equals records are both fascinating, but I think my favourite CD of theirs is defekt on Matchless: the 45 minute track at the end gives you a full on blast of "classic Furt" but the three tracks before show that that's by no means all that they can do. Haven't hea...

Re: innovation in improvised music.
I love Simon's quote from Barthes. Just very briefly on Derek's flexibility/lack of flexibility (relevant to this thread if a lack of flexibility hinders the possibility of innovation): I certainly agree that on his less satisfying recordings one gets a sense of this. It seems to me (and of course I...

Re: innovation in improvised music.
I've really been enjoying reading this thread - I think it's a fruitful discussion and I actually think there's quite a lot of common ground between people - more differences in evaluation rather than basic premises. Just a couple of points: I think it's important to remember than linear evolution i...
