The Road
Watered down but still deeply unpleasant, just without any kind of real payoff. It really should have been made by someone like Haneke - austere, bleak, and absolutely no pulled punches.

Re: Recently Watched Films
Don't Look Now has some great sequences but it drags like crazy in the middle from what I recall. I'd much rather watch Bad Timing, Performance, or The Man Who Fell to Earth to get my Roeg fix.

Re: Favourite sound moments in film
"young americans" is used in Manderlay too, works just perfectly in both cases It's been a while since I've seen Dogville but if anything I thought the music and images worked even better in Manderlay ! It got me interested in Jacob Holdt's work and I've since become a fan of his book American Pict...

Re: Recently Watched Films
In what form did you see that one? There's a French DVD edition, I believe, but it remains elusive elsewhere. Apparently a recently scheduled screening of the first part in London was cancelled at the request of the Chinese government. Wang Bing seems like a very interesting documentarist - I've on...

Thanks, jon! I do lurk quite a bit still, but yeah it's been a while since I posted. I'll try to do that more often...jon abbey wrote:welcome back, dude! stick around...

Word is that Sony will be releasing Husbands on DVD soon as part of their 'Martini movies' series (whatever that means).

I'm surprised no one's mentioned The Killing of a Chinese Bookie yet. I go back and forth between that one and A Woman Under the Influence for favorite Cassavetes film... There's still a couple I haven't gotten around to seeing though.

Works for me - I consider GVS to be one of the few truly great American filmmakers working right now. His films do seem to polarize people, though.Dan Warburton wrote:Gus van Sant in the same breath as Welles and Kubrick? (That's a thread in itself

I enjoyed The Death of Mr. Lazarescu - speaking of which, the actor who played Lazarescu died within the last year.

Re: Recorded in someone's bathroom?
It's the result of overly aggressive noise reduction plug-ins used to "restore" the original soundtrack by removing static/hiss/buzz/cracks/etc. When done incorrectly, it hollows out the audio and creates all kinds of weird artifacts. The good news is that reportedly bfi's upcoming Red Desert releas...

Re: Frederick Wiseman
Belfast, Maine has some good stuff but I don't like it as much as many of his other films. In a way, it feels like a summary of the themes he's explored more fully elsewhere - a slight revisiting of his entire oeuvre in the microcosm of one small town: hospitals, police, social workers, food proces...

Beautiful recording that always reveals something new when I listen to it. I prefer it to the newer Flux Quartet recording, although both are worth hearing...

The biggest omission is a lengthy dialogue between Godard and the late, great Serge Daney in episode 2A. No idea why they didn't translate that section. Craig Keller, a producer for the Masters of Cinema DVD series and all-around Godard expert did post a translation of said section on the Criterionf...

Is the current DVD release of Weekend a good enough transfer to purchase? I've had it on VHS for years. Thanks for the advice. It's fine. I favor the R2 over the R1, firstly because of PAL-NTSC conversion issues, and secondly because in one sequence New Yorker in R1 have taken it upon themselves to...

as for eMule, i've been out of its loop for years unfortunately The thing about eMule is that it takes patience. Files can take days(sometimes weeks) to download but in terms of sheer availability I haven't found anything better. Yeah, eMule is awesome overall. Not as fast as a well-seeded torrent,...
